A single session of chiropractic care increases maximal bite force in healthy individuals with potentially long-lasting effects!

This year continues to be a great one for the Centre for Chiropractic Research. One of our studies that has recently been accepted for publication showed that a single session of chiropractic care increased jaw muscle bite strength in a group of healthy individuals (1). In this study, we measured the bite force of 28-subjects jaw muscles which was assessed before and after a single session of chiropractic care or a control intervention (sham adjustment) and then again one week later.

The chiropractic care given to these healthy people, who had never received chiropractic care before, comprised of full spine adjusting wherever subluxations were found through clinical assessment. The results of this study showed that bite force significantly increased in the chiropractic group (by 11%) compared to the control group (no significant difference). This group difference was also seen a week later where the chiropractic group bite force remained increased (by 13%) while the control group decreased (by 6.3%).

This study is really interesting because it showed that adjusting the spine impacted jaw muscle strength, which is controlled by cranial nerves. This supports the growing body of research that suggests that chiropractic care impacts human performance by changing brain function (2-5). Further research is now needed to better understand the link between chiropractic care and jaw function.

This research was undertaken in collaboration with Koç University in Turkey; Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, Aalborg University in Denmark, and Life University in the United States of America. The study was funded by Koç University, Life University and the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. How does chiropractic work?
Some interesting research coming out of New Zealand has recently demonstrated an increase in neurological drive from the brain to the muscles of the leg during maximum voluntary contractions. After a single chiropractic adjustment, a 45% increase in neurological drive from brain to muscle resulted in a 16% improvement in the force produced. The authors of the study concluded that this amount of increase from just one adjustment is comparable to three weeks of strength training: imagine the benefit from adding regular chiropractic care to your current training schedule. The same study revealed that chiropractic adjustments also decreased fatigue and enhanced muscle recovery. Another study showed that chiropractic adjustments drastically increase activation of the core muscles – in particular, the ability to fire the core immediately prior to a given activity to provide stability. It's time to rethink biases about chiropractors

Spinal manipulation and other therapies seem at least as effective and safe as more traditional treatment.

26/04/2017

Chiropractic was not founded or intended as a reactive and rehabilitative approach to health. The fundamentals of chiropractic are based upon a couple of scientific certainties:
1. The human body is an intricate and intelligent system that has an inbuilt capacity to self-heal and self-regulate, and
2. This is governed by a complex master control centre called the central nervous system.
The central nervous system comprises the brain and spinal cord. It is an organ so important that the body exclusively encases it in a hard protective shell: the skull and spine – no other organ is so well protected. Herein lies the answer to why chiropractors work with the spine or ‘back’ – because of its intimate relationship with the body’s master control centre, the nervous system.
