🌿 Some of Fern crew hit the road recently was supporting clients in Christchurch to receive the support and guidance they need in navigating the healthcare system.

One of the things we love when travelling is when the community is genuinely interested in what our logo on our hoodies represents. It opens many conversations as it is hard to miss! So here's our why.

Our logo beautifully captures the essence of Fern Collective Ltd. The why it started and why it's grown its own path based on needs.

The ferns growing at different stages represent the unique journeys of neurodivergent individuals and their families alongside. This is often, unseen, unheard and misunderstood.

While the hands wrapping above and below signify our commitment as a little organisation to providing solid foundations and ongoing lived experience non-judgmental and supportive services to the best of our ability.

The outer circle represents a safe space, offering a sense of community and unity in a world that can often feel isolating and dark.

The green on the black colour hoodie represents its own idea also, with the black the darkness before and the green from the growth and strengthening of wellbeing to bring balance and brightness.

So why was Fern started?

A dark path I personally walked and navigated alone for my own fern and myself. I quickly learnt there wasn't the right service or support who understood or had walked it, the education sector was harmful, not on purpose but due to lack of understanding and training, life was isolating and caused a lot of trauma and not to mention physical pain where the body held it all, the guilt and self blame as a parent. I went through judgement, blamed for something out of anyone's control, negativity from what was meant to be a support network, attempts of correction of the wrong kind, disadvantages in many areas, no actual helpful supports, no resources without a unrealistic cost. It was all too much.

Until someone came into my life and just clicked with our situation and I was heard, understood and validated by one gp who allowed a parent to request, question and advocate, one principal who held hope and aroha and a parent to lead the best interest of the child, one teacher, who spoke up on our behalf, held foundations when it was rocky. It took over a decade to find this. It changed everything.

So the why, so others don't walk alone. A community is here. You are heard, seen and there are options, and if there isn't we are alongside you. If your voice is silenced or under valued we will speak up beside you.

🌿 The upcoming chef is back in the kitchen at the Fern hub!!

This time we are prepping for the colder months and learning solid foundations like soup! Stocking the freezer is so important!

Today's menu was Thai Pumpkin and Coconut Soup! A little fancy and delish!!

Can you share a go to easy recipe that our youth should just know and use to get ready for independence!?!

🌿 Some things are so frustratingly hard and really testing for children but oh, so rewarding, and they bring so much joy!

Does this resonate with you?!

We often forget how the little things can tip ferns over the edge so easily. Take kite flying, for example. The technique is hard, the string snaps, or the wind is too soft and so much more ... And next minute it feels like the whole world is against you! Until suddenly, it's gliding in the air. What happiness, and the frustration is gone as quickly as it appeared!

I'm wondering:

What moments can you think of with your fern that are real "edge tippers"?

Drop them in the comments below!

🌿 Sometimes, words just don't fit.

Have you ever asked your fern "How are you feeling?" only to be met with a shrug, a blank stare, or a meltdown?

When big feelings take over, the language center of the brain can literally go offline. Expecting ferns to find the perfect word to describe their internal world can feel like a massive overwhelming task.

That’s where low-effort, high-impact visuals come in like the Washi Tape Emotion Poster.

Washi tape is perfect for this because it’s completely low-stakes, easy and fast. It tears easily, sticks without ruin, comes in every color and pattern imaginable, and provides a lovely tactile experience.

Because it’s a physical and color-based activity; ferns can just point to a section or tape, lay down a strip of tape of choice that resonates, or layer colors when they are feeling a mix of two things at once like being excited and nervous for school.

It takes the pressure off and makes emotional processing a hands-on, creative moment rather than a verbal interrogation. Let it roll!

🌿 Jellybean Therapy

Ever had those days where your emotions feel like a chaotic, tangled mess, but when someone asks "What’s wrong?"your mind just goes completely blank? You aren't alone. Sometimes, words just fail us.

That’s where Jellybean Therapy comes in! It’s a creative, judgment-free way to externalise what’s happening on the inside by using a visual "map" of jellybeans.

Here is how we use a simple drawing of jellybeans or eating jelly beans to crack open our emotional world.

Meet the Colors:

To keep things simple and clear, we assign just one primary emotion to each color.

Your map might look like this:

🔴 Red: Anger
🟡 Yellow: Anxiety
🔵 Blue: Sadness
🟢 Green: Happy
⚫ Black: Confusion

Now colour your jellybeans to reflect your emotions over a set time! How often did you feel each.

Reflect on the Layout:

It’s not just about which colors you choose, but how they show up on the page. The way the jellybeans are drawn tells the real story:

Clustered together:

If beans are tightly packed in a corner or in clusters, it might mean that emotion feels overwhelming, heavy, or bottled up.

Scattered or Spread out:

Beans floating all over the place and even may represent being balanced and emotions following.

Running a pattern:

This shows the rhythm of your feelings. Maybe you draw them going up and down like a rollercoaster, or maybe they show up in a sudden, strong burst before becoming scattered and balanced again.

Opening Communication, the Magic Part!

Once the drawing is done, the pressure is off. You don't have to explain why you feel a certain way; you just have to look at the paper together.

This is an incredible, reflective tool especially when working with teens, children, and parents together to understand each other.

Instead of asking heavy, intimidating questions, parents and youth can sit down, look at the jellybean map, and explore together safely:

"I notice there are a lot of scattered yellow beans today. Does your anxiety feel a bit all over the place?"

"Look at that big burst of red beans that suddenly balances out into green. It looks like that anger came on really strong and then settled into calm. Want to look at that together?"

Why It Works:

It’s Visual & Tangible:

It takes a big, scary, abstract feeling and turns it into a colorful little bean.

Pattern Identification:

It helps us notice triggers and emotional rhythms, like those sudden bursts or up-and-down cycles.

Zero Judgment:

There is no "wrong" way to draw your jellybeans. It just is.
