Hope and Sons Funeral Directors As a leader in professional funeral service, experience and qualified expertise, Hope and Sons will make a difficult time easier for you.

Hope and Sons has over 130 years experience within the funeral industry, five generations of the Hope family have directed, guided and worked within the company since it was established in 1887. Over time funerals have changed and evolved, what families want and expect has changed too. As a business that has seen and been a part of the evolution we are uniquely qualified to care for families and our community, making each funeral or farewell special for every family our firm looks after. People often mention “the team at Hopes”, and that’s exactly what we are. We have over 33 staff throughout each of our departments. We have a range of personalities, experiences, ages, and skills so when we all work together we can help create a good experience at an often-difficult time

A classic from another time, woven into Dunedin’s story.

One of just six brought into New Zealand new in 1961, this Dodge served for many years as our primary hearse here in Dunedin. Now fully restored and back in our fleet, it offers a timeless, dignified option for a farewell that feels both personal and respectful.

A classic from another era, and part of Dunedin’s story.

One of just six imported into New Zealand new in 1961, this Dodge served as our main hearse in Dunedin for years. Fully restored and returned to our fleet, it remains a traditional, dignified choice for a meaningful farewell.

We offer a range of funeral options and pricing, and we take care of every aspect of the arrangements so families feel supported from beginning to end.

If you’d like to talk through everything that's included, we’re here to help.

A piece of Dunedin’s history, still carrying out its purpose with quiet dignity.

This 1926 Chrysler hearse, restored by Hope and Sons in 1987 for our centennial, is one of the city’s earliest motorised hearses. Almost a century later, it remains in service, continuing to support families with the same care, respect and presence it was built for.

Support looks different for every family, and no two are ever the same.

Clear communication, genuine care, and a calm presence can make an overwhelming process feel more manageable.

We’re grateful to the families who recognise that effort, and to our team members, like Bailey, who show up with heart and professionalism every day.

A piece of Dunedin history, still serving with dignity.

This 1926 Chrysler hearse was restored by Hope and Sons in 1987 as part of our centennial, one of the city’s original motor hearses. Nearly a century on, it continues to do what it was built to do, supporting families with care and respect.

Hope and Sons Funeral Directors

You have told us how it helped seeing the person after they had died. How good it was to hear stories, and memories, and remember together. How you gained support from those around you, from friends and family. You have told us how hard that final farewell was, but also that it was very important to begin to let go.

At Hope and Sons we recognise and embrace each person for their unique fingerprint of life. We are committed to guiding and overseeing a farewell that is as exceptional, and as special as the person we are remembering.

Over our decades of service we have helped and served families in Dunedin, its surrounds, and throughout the Otago and Southland regions, forming many friendships along the way. Hope and Sons has its company offices, chapel, and reception lounge on the corner of Andersons Bay Road and Oxford Street, Dunedin. It also has premises at Middleton Road, Dunedin, Tiverton Street, Palmerston, Dukes Road North, Mosgiel, and Gordon Road, Mosgiel.
