Would you like to be stronger and more efficient with your press ups?

We would suggest against ❌ doing them on your knees.

Rather we suggest keeping straight alignment, and gradually lowering the height you do them from, as a means of progression and increasing gravity demands.

What does squatting with a straight spine mean?

Many people confuse a “straight spine” to be vertically inclined.

In this video, we show you the concept of a “straight spine” using a wooden dowel, where one pattern is more knee dominant, and the second pattern is more hip dominant.

🤸‍♂️Hypermobility🤸‍♂️

Many people have a desire to become more flexible and may be surprised that having too much flexibility could be dangerous. This can be the case for someone who is hypermobile (aka “double-jointed”) which is when your joints and muscles move through a greater than average range of motion enabling someone to do things such as palm the floor with ease or bend their thumb backwards to their forearm.

Physio can play a vital role in managing this. Hypermobile people often feel “stiff” and feel the need to stretch to relieve this feeling but it is actually due to the body trying to offer as much stability as possible to protect against excessive motion, but in an inefficient manner.

Instead of continuing to excessively stretch, which will further precipitate instability, we can teach your body postural and motor control. This will improve muscle reflexes and reactive timing to create more integrity around a joint which will ultimately help minimise excessive motion and strain during movement.

The “path of least resistance”

The human body is hard-wired to take the “path of least resistance” to conserve energy and also lessen strain on body parts in the short-term.

Therefore, if a “tightness” or lack of stability exists on one side over the other (could be left-right or front-back difference), the body will create inappropriate muscle contraction, torsion or weight shifting to avoid exerting more effort than necessary.

This often leads to an increased risk of injury or pain as the human body will choose something else that was never designed to cope with the task.

e.g. Load the other knee more during a squat leading to pain or using low back to lift because of stiff hips
