Burton, Stephen Wayne
8.8.60 – 4.9.25
On Thursday 4th September as a result of a tragic accident, Stephen lost his life doing something that he loved, Motorcycling.
Stephen was the youngest son of Fred and Raylene Burton (*) and brother of Peter, brother-in-law to Margaret and uncle to Jack, his only nephew. (*denotes deceased)

Despite being part of a small immediate family, he was a cousin and friend to many in the large extended family both in NZ and overseas. Those who knew Stephen could see in him a truly compassionate soul, who gave many voluntary hours to Ross home and his other passion of singing in groups and choirs. His work driving the school busses for children needing special care and his devoted care to ageing parents Fred and Raylene using his (ex) nursing skills, testifies to his compassionate approach to all life.

A service to celebrate Stephen’s life will be held at Gillions Chapel, 407 Hillside Road, South Dunedin, at 11am on Saturday, September 13. Messages to the Burton family C/- Gillions Funeral Services

Ride free my dear wee brother, Ride on forever, Open that throttle and go. There's nothing in your way now.

Peter, Margaret, Jack and Annabel

If you have been keeping up with the news lately you may have noticed several distressing stories about a lack of care demonstrated by some funeral directors when being contracted by bereaved families after the loss of their loved one.

There is no government regulatory authority for funeral directors in New Zealand but all funeral directors must comply with legal requirements around care of the deceased as specified in the Burials and Cremations Act.

In addition, there are requirements for fair pricing and contracts under the Fair Trading Act, as well as obligations that apply under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

We are members of the Funeral Directors Association so sign up to the ethics and standards that are part of our membership.

We know that transparency of pricing is important along with ensuring that the options chosen work with families’ budgets. We regularly provide detailed pricing estimates along with information to help with farewell planning.

Our many years of experience have also shown us that it is important to be looking at the ‘big picture’ when choosing a service provider.

When you engage Gillions to look after arrangements for your loved one you will have the comfort and assurance that they will be well looked after from the time we
transfer them to our care until the time we take them to the crematorium or cemetery.

Our care for you continues beyond this time as we know that grief does not have a time limit.

In today’s digital world, the way we remember and honour loved ones is evolving.

Virtual memorials, online tribute pages, and recorded messages allow families to preserve stories, share memories, and keep connections alive across generations.

Digital legacies—such as saved photos, videos, and heartfelt messages—offer a lasting tribute that can bring comfort and reflection.

At Gillions, we understand the importance of keeping memories alive in meaningful ways, both online and in person.

However you choose to honour a life, what matters most is ensuring love and legacy endure.
