🔑 Recovering from injury can sometimes be a slow and challenging process, both mentally and physically. We know it can be tempting to dive right back in, but here are some important things to consider first.

1) Have you completed your rehab? Rehabilitation exercises prescribed by physios serve specific purposes with the intent to help your body recover as soon as possible. The more you follow your rehab plan, the easier your return to sport is likely to be. Often you will slowly or partially return to your sport or activity before you have fully completed your rehab, your physio will help guide this process.

2) Are you actually ready? Preparedness for sport isn’t just about feeling good when standing or walking. It’s also about ensuring that your body can do the things that is required in your particular sport or activity. For example, some sports require particular demands, such as jumping, tackling, changing directions, power etc. Your physio will prescribe exercises specific to the demands of your activity to help you return back to what you love doing.

3) Are you prepared to listen to your body? As you return to your sport, take the time to listen to your body before, during and afterwards. If you are feeling any discomfort, apprehension, pain and/or have any questions about your injury, ensure you let your physio know.

Chat to your physio to discuss the best return-to-sport plan for you.

Whether you’re making your grand comeback to sport from off-season or injury, here are some simple tips to follow to ensure you stay injury free.

Tip 1: Warm up every time. Warming up your body and activating muscle groups helps to reduce risk of injury.

Tip 2: Hydrate and fuel your body. Getting enough water, food and sleep are all factors that contribute to your performance - both on the court or field, and when recovering afterwards.

Tip 3: Pay attention to what you are feeling in your body. If something doesn’t feel right or is causing discomfort, seek advice.

Your physiotherapist can step you through your return to sport/activity plan. If you need any assistance, we’re always here to help so that you can enjoy the activity you love .

Enjoy the preseason!

To make SMART goals we need to be SPECIFIC in what we want to achieve! This helps us to plan how to get there and break it down even further!

They need to be MEASURABLE! ie, how do we know that we have made progress? Can we chart it? Can we DO something again? And they need to be ACHIEVABLE too! I think the biggest thing here is are they ? Can you actually physically do this? Don't make it impossible, be kind to yourself!

The RELEVENCY of our goals also matters. Do they link to bigger plans, like going skiing in Japan, or hiking up Mt Cook? Are you rehab goals going to help you get there?

And the last thing is to have a TIMEFRAME. And end date to encourage prioritization, and help with motivation and discipline.

What are SMART goals?

Essentially its a method to help create better goals that are more likely to be followed and then achieved! It adds a nice structure to build from and guide our choices in rehab and life, and allows us to see progress and change, even if it is to just walk to the letter box and back!

Tomorrow we'll give you a little more detail around these and what we should be thinking about when it comes to setting our SMART goals

Add a warm up into your routine!

Don’t worry, we’ve all been guilty of not warming up at some point. But taking time to warm up properly not only makes moving feel a whole lot easier - it also helps to reduce your risk of injury.

So before you hit the footy field, pitch or court, take a few minutes to warm up, stretch, and get your body moving. Your body will thank you for it!
