A practical skin health guideline clinicians often use is the two week rule:

If you have a spot, scab, sore, or irritated patch that doesn’t improve within two weeks (or keeps returning), it’s worth getting checked, especially if it:

Bleeds or crusts repeatedly

Is painful or persistently itchy

Looks different from your other spots

Is new and changing

Most things turn out to be harmless but early assessment is how we catch the important exceptions.

Many common skin findings are benign (like skin tags), but it’s not always possible to tell by guesswork. Consider a clinical check if a spot:

Is new and growing quickly

Bleeds easily or ulcerates

Becomes painful or persistently itchy

Changes colour or shape

Looks unlike your other spots

A helpful mindset: “common” doesn’t mean “ignore.” It means “assess appropriately.”

In NZ, UV can be high even when it’s cool or cloudy. Sun safety isn’t about perfection, it’s about repeatable habits:

Broad-spectrum SPF on exposed skin

Reapply if outdoors for long periods, sweating, or swimming

Hat + sunglasses + sleeves when practical

Shade during peak UV hours when possible

Sun protection supports both skin cancer prevention and long-term skin health.

The ABCDE guide helps you decide when a mole or spot should be checked. It doesn’t replace a clinician exam, it helps you notice changes earlier.

A Symmetry: one half unlike the other
B Border: irregular, blurred, or notched edges
C Colour: multiple colours or uneven pigmentation
D Diameter: increasing size (or any rapid change)
E Evolving: changing over weeks/months

If you notice E (evolving), that’s often the most important.

Skin changes are easy to miss because they happen gradually.
A simple habit: know your normal.

Once a month, in good light, check: scalp, behind ears, back, soles, and between toes.

Look for:

A new spot that wasn’t there before

A spot that is changing (size, shape, colour, texture)

A spot that itches, bleeds, crusts, or won’t heal

The “ugly duckling” - one lesion that looks different to the rest

If you’re unsure, it’s reasonable to have it assessed. Skin health is healthcare.

Scars are a natural part of the healing process, but their appearance can change over time. Factors like skin type, location, and care during healing affect how prominent a scar becomes. Understanding your scar and proper care can help keep your skin healthy and smooth.

Birthmarks come in many shapes, sizes, and colours. Most are harmless, but some can change over time or cause skin irritation. Knowing the type of birthmark you have - whether it’s vascular (red or purple) or pigmented (brown or tan) - helps you monitor changes and care for your skin properly.

Regular skin checks are important to ensure that your birthmark remains healthy. If you notice rapid growth, colour change, bleeding, or discomfort, it’s worth seeking professional advice.

📞 Schedule a skin consultation with Dr. Safari to understand your birthmarks and get peace of mind.

Freckles or sun damage?
They can look similar, but they’re not always the same thing.

Freckles are usually harmless and genetic — sun damage, on the other hand, develops over time and can signal changes in your skin that are worth checking. In Dunedin’s high-UV environment, early assessment matters.

At our clinic, we assess skin concerns thoroughly and can advise on monitoring, treatment, or safe removal where needed — always with your long-term skin health in mind.

Peeling skin isn’t “just a sunburn”. It’s a sign that UV rays have damaged the deeper layers of your skin.
And while the redness might fade, the long-term effects don’t.

In Central Dunedin, we’re exposed to strong UV levels, even on cloudy days, making daily protection more important than ever.

Here’s what we recommend:
✔️ Broad-spectrum SPF every morning
✔️ Reapply every 2–3 hours when outdoors
✔️ Cover up during peak UV times
✔️ Book regular skin checks if you’ve had repeated sunburns

Your skin is your largest organ — treat it like it protects you… because it does. 🧴☀️
