🏙️ One quiet advantage of building tech in Dunedin: a steady pipeline of fresh ideas from the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic.

Four Otago Polytechnic design students recently put Soter under the microscope, reworking colour, contrast, and interaction flow to make both the app and outdoor-unit screens more accessible and intuitive for users with diverse abilities.

Big thanks to the student team and their lecturer for steering the project. Projects like this give students real-world experience and local companies a valuable injection of new perspective.

The opportunity to learn the art of App Design encouraged full-time web developer Xinyue (Luna) Zhang to add part-time study to her busy schedule.

The Elderly Bodily Assistance Robot (E-BAR) from MIT is a rolling frame that:
• lifts someone out of a chair (or off the floor),
• steadies their walk on four smart wheels, and
• pops out inflatable side-airbags if they start to fall.

Falls are the #1 cause of injury for people 65+, and tech like this could keep folks safer and at home longer, without relying on bulky harnesses or full-time human help.

We’re betting this is just the first wave. Expect more friendly robots roaming hallways, catching falls, and lending a lift in the next few years.
