Earlier this week, our Director and Co-founder visited our manufacturer in South Korea.

The visit was a valuable chance to sit down together and talk through current device improvements, future developments, and new opportunities for collaboration. Dr Hong also had the opportunity to tour their manufacturing and testing facilities, seeing first-hand the level of precision and quality that goes into every device.

👁️‍🗨️June is Cataract Awareness Month – a time to reflect on the importance of early detection and equal access to eye care.

Cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness globally, especially in communities with limited access to eye care. They’re treatable with timely diagnosis, yet sadly many still go without the care they need.

We developed the oDocs nun to help make eye examinations more accessible. Here, our director, Dr Hong, carries out a routine eye check using the device on a patient in Borneo — the kind that can change lives when done early.

oDocs and VistaVision were recently featured on TVNZ for our telerobotics project, breaking down barriers in eye care – especially for remote and rural communities. National trials were recently conducted at Dargaville Medical Centre and Te Hau Ora O Ngāpuhi (THOON) clinic in Kaikohe.

Over the summer, our Director of Research, Dr Renoh Chalakkal conducted the tele-robotics trial at Choithram Netralaya Hospital in India alongside the study’s academic advisor, Dr Jaspreet Dhupia, Senior Lecturer from the University of Auckland.

Over 100 real patients took part of this trial! They had specialists who joined virtually from New Zealand controlling the imaging devices located in India remotely from New Zealand, while patients at the Choithram side were supported by a local optometrist. Renoh and Jaspreet were there for a week to assist with setup and to train the local optometrists to use the system.

Exciting start to our proposed Telerobotics project, with domestic trials in Dargaville to follow later this year. 🔜

Last but not least, this is Dr Sheng C Hong, our esteemed Director & Co-founder. A visionary behind oDocs, Hong oversees the big picture alongside Ben, ensuring our mission to revolutionize eye care stays on track.🌟

In addition to his leadership role, Hong is a consultant ophthalmologist at Dunedin Hospital, specialising in cornea, anterior segment, and cataract. He also keeps a full schedule conducting private clinics in Dunedin and at Otago Vision Specialist in Queenstown.

Outside of his medical and business endeavors, Hong has a passion for crafting his own homemade fly lures and fly fishing along the Mataura River and in the high country. When time allows, he flexes his creative side by filming and editing his fishing adventures on TikTok @ surgeonfishing. 🎣⚕️

Of course, we can’t forget our brilliant Director & Co-founder, Dr Ben O’Keeffe. Ben is more widely known as NZ’s most capped test rugby referee and frequently travels the world as part of his job. In the last year alone, he has visited South Africa, Thailand, Japan, England, Italy... and the list goes on!

As a medical doctor, he has special interests in ophthalmology, musculoskeletal medicine and cosmetic medicine. He has also started a new venture into opening an aesthetics clinic in Auckland under *pssst* bookings are open~!

Our Story

oDocs Eye Care is a New Zealand based technology company with a mission to transform mobile eye care. oDocs won numerous national and international awards, and is a leader in the field of smartphone based ophthalmic diagnostic company.

Founded in 2014 by Dr Hong and Dr O’Keeffe, it was the first social enterprise in New Zealand providing open-source medical equipment. The concept immediately attracted global attention which led to the launch of the open-source files.

The company is a strong supporter of a variety health initiatives locally and abroad. In 2017, the company launched MedicMind, an online platform for the development of Artificial intelligence.
