Reaching out for support can be nerve-wrecking, especially if you are not sure what to expect. Here are a few things that are helpful to know:

• You do not need to be in crisis to ask for support
• The first session is usually about getting to know you and understanding what support might be helpful
• Feeling nervous, emotional, or awkward at the start is very common
• Let your counsellor or other super provider know if you're feeling nervous or worried about what to expect
• You can ask questions at any time
• If it doesn't feel like the right fit, it is okay to try someone else
• Progress can take time and looks different for everyone

Reaching out for support is not about fixing yourself. It is about giving yourself space to talk, reflect, and be supported in a way that works for you.

If you are ready to take that first step, the ignite marketplace makes it easy to explore available providers and book support that feels right for you. Check it out here: https://marketplace.ignite.org.nz/providers.

The first step can be daunting, but support is there when you are ready.

At the start of the year, it is easy to feel like you need to change everything at once.

A simple way to make new habits stick is habit stacking. It’s about linking a new habit to something you already do consistently, so it naturally fits into your day instead of competing with it.

This works because it reduces effort and decision making. The existing habit becomes the prompt, which makes the new behaviour easier to repeat and more likely to last.

A helpful way to start is with this structure:
After I [existing habit], I will [new habit].

For example:
After I make my morning coffee, I pause and take a few deep breaths
After I brush my teeth, I do a short stretch
After I open my laptop, I decide my top three priorities for the day

Small, well-placed habits are often more effective than ambitious plans that are hard to sustain. The goal is not perfection, but consistency.

What's one habit you can stack this week?

A little Christmas reminder as the festive season gets busy: it’s okay to slow down and put your wellbeing first. Amid the catch ups, commitments, and celebrations, self-care can look like stepping outside for some fresh air, saying no to one more plan, going to bed a little earlier, or taking a quiet moment to reset. Small choices like these can help you feel more grounded and enjoy the season more fully.

Christmas lunch conversations can get interesting, especially when Uncle Bob’s political views come out across the table.

In this video, Dr Christina Baird, Psychologist on the ignite platform, shares four practical tips to help you navigate tricky conversations while protecting your wellbeing. She talks about choosing the values you want to lead with, noticing when emotions are driving the conversation, getting curious about what’s really going on underneath, and expressing yourself clearly without inviting an argument.

Grab a cuppa and take a few minutes to pick up some practical tips to help you navigate some of the challenges that can come up during the holidays.

About Ignite Aotearoa

Ignite Aotearoa is a wellbeing social enterprise, backed by Emerge Aotearoa - one of the largest independent mental health organisations in New Zealand. We exist to strengthen community wellbeing by addressing inequity and removing barriers to accessing resources and support.

Our kaupapa meets a vital need for mental health and wellbeing offerings that are evidence-based, fast and easy to access, provide flexible options and cater to a range of budgets. Ignite’s solutions include education, a digital wellbeing platform, and specialised research and evaluation services.

Currently, our focus is partnering with workplaces to enhance employee wellbeing. Over time we will work alongside other groups to deliver next-generation wellbeing solutions, including health providers, schools, iwi and whānau.

Our ultimate aim is to re-invest our profits into providing mental health and wellbeing support for at-risk communities. When you choose to partner with Ignite, you’re supporting a wider vision of a thriving Aotearoa for all.
