Meet the team and get to know the friendly faces behind your care!

📌 Zainul Isahak - Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP)

Originally from Singapore, Zainul joins The Doctors Silverstream & Muritai teams with a wealth of experience. He holds a Master of Counselling, and a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction. He has also created a comprehensive HIP guide on Smoking & Va**ng Cessation, helping more patients to successfully quit.

Although much of his earlier work was in specialised areas of mental health and addiction, he is very comfortable supporting individuals of all ages with a broad range of health concerns. He is committed to delivering accessible and effective support, and has previously worked with couples, and children with autism.

Prior to becoming a HIP, Zainul co-facilitated the Addiction Therapeutic Community programme at Rimutaka Prison, provided counselling and group therapy with CareNZ, and worked as an ACC Sensitive Claims Provider.

Zainul works at our Muritai practice on Mondays, and Silverstream practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

❄ VACCINES TO CONSIDER THIS SEASON ❄

📌 Influenza (flu) vaccine
The flu changes each year, so annual vaccination is recommended. It helps protect against the most common circulating strains and reduces the risk of severe illness. The flu vaccine is funded for eligible groups, including people aged 65+, pregnant people, and those with certain health conditions. If you do not fit the eligibility criteria for a funded flu vaccine, you can still get the flu vaccine with us for a small fee.

📌 Covid-19 vaccine
Covid continues to circulate in the community. Staying up to date with boosters helps maintain protection. Covid vaccines are free for everyone aged 5 and over in NZ. They are also available to tamariki from 6 months who are at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get Covid. Timing of boosters will depend on your previous doses.

📌 RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccine
RSV can cause serious illness in babies, older adults and those with a weakened immune system. The Arexvy® vaccine protects against RSV infection. It’s for people who are 60 years of age and older, or adults 50 to 59 years of age who are at increased risk for RSV. It isn’t funded in NZ.

📌 Shingles vaccine
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus and can lead to long-lasting nerve pain. While it can occur at any time of year, now is a good time to consider vaccination alongside the flu vaccine. Shingrix® (the shingles vaccine) is recommended for adults aged 50 and over. It is funded for people aged 65, and for those aged 18+ who are at increased risk of shingles.

Our team can help you decide which vaccines are right for you this winter!

❄ Protect yourself and your whānau this winter ❄

Why get vaccinated? Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your whānau from winter illness. Vaccines help your immune system recognise and fight infections, which can:

▪ Reduce your risk of getting seriously unwell
▪ Lower the chance of hospitalisation
▪ Help protect vulnerable people around you
▪ Support community immunity during the autumn and winter peak.

Even if you’re generally healthy, vaccination can reduce the severity of illness and minimise time off work or school. This is especially important for:

❗ People aged 65+
❗ Pregnant people
❗ Babies and young children
❗ People with long-term health conditions.

📣 12-MONTH SCRIPT LEGISLATION CHANGES

From 1st February 2026 changes to prescribing lengths have come into action, allowing GPs to issue prescriptions up to 12-months in length to some patients, if clinically safe to do so. The decision on the appropriate prescription length will be entirely down to the GP’s discretion on a case-by-case basis but primarily aims at providing easier access to medication for people with long-term, stable conditions.

There are certain prescriptions which cannot be issued more frequently, for example:
▪ Controlled medicines (e.g. opioids, stimulants, etc).
▪ Medications/conditions that require frequent monitoring
▪ Some important points to consider:

Issuing a 12-month prescription comes with an agreement that you must attend at least once per year for a medication review, to check if your medication and/or dosage is still suitable.

Even with a 12-month prescription you cannot collect 12-months’ worth of your medication at once—medicines can still only be collected in 3-month instalments.

All instalments throughout the 12-month period must be collected from the same pharmacy. A 12-month prescription cannot be split between different pharmacies.

Please see the links below for more information on the changes, and what this means for you.
