The fun of on call....
Like most community midwives in Aotearoa I am on call 24/7. On call for labour and birth and urgent/emergency care, not the sniffles at 10pm on a Sunday night. The downside of this is that 24/7 really does mean 24/7. In the typical style of Murphy's Law I will often get called when it is the most inconvenient time. I also find that it tends to affect the same people!!
Please know that if I contact to reschedule an appointment, or am running later than expected, I do not do this to be a bother to you or because I'm chilling and don't feel like working (I'm sure we all get that feeling, particularly Monday mornings 😅). I do it because someone needs me at that time and unfortunately non urgent appointments need to move.
I'm not only a midwife, but a mum. I am on many of the same parent and local Facebook groups you might be. I often see posts about midwives having to reschedule appointments and understand how incredibly frustrating it is. But I wanted to give you some view of our side too.....
For most of us we rent, at our own cost, a regular clinic space, Mondays and Thursdays in Linwood and Fridays in Rangiora for me. Other midwives use these spaces when I'm not there. I am also juggling other visits outside of antenatal clinic along with life and teens in general. Those of you who have seen me at some ungodly hour up on maternity after you've had your baby will know this well!! I really do not reschedule your appointment lightly 😅
Please know that when you need me for that urgent care I'm likely rescheduling others for you, just as I may have done in your pregnancy too....
So this is my view getting ready on a Saturday morning (thank you Rangiora Hospital for some flexibility!!) for the clinic I've rescheduled twice this week!
