Did you know there's a good chance if you've got one of my quilts the inside is good old fashion woolen blankets!
I try and make these with all natural fibers for pēpi. I get the blankets second hand, wash them, dry them and cut them up!! They're all made by me with love. I hope they keep your wee ones warm and snug.
For any of us 80's kids who remember the old Onehunga woolen blankets, I promise they're not scratchy like this!!! Always South Auckland proud 🥰

Did you know only 4% of babies arrive on their estimated due date? That means there’s a 96% chance your baby will NOT arrive on their due date. More often than not, first time mums will birth AFTER 40 weeks. I like to use the term ‘due month’ as full term is any time after 37 weeks and up to 42 weeks!

Share your due date vs actual dates below! Were you one of the rare 4% whose baby shared a due date AND a birthday? 💭⬇️

Midwife hot tips:
💥Picture yourself going to 42 weeks so anything earlier is a bonus & you’re not too disappointed when you reach your due date with no signs of baby
💥 Tell people you’re due later than you really are to avoid the “any signs of baby yet?” questions 🤭

The fun of on call....

Like most community midwives in Aotearoa I am on call 24/7. On call for labour and birth and urgent/emergency care, not the sniffles at 10pm on a Sunday night. The downside of this is that 24/7 really does mean 24/7. In the typical style of Murphy's Law I will often get called when it is the most inconvenient time. I also find that it tends to affect the same people!!

Please know that if I contact to reschedule an appointment, or am running later than expected, I do not do this to be a bother to you or because I'm chilling and don't feel like working (I'm sure we all get that feeling, particularly Monday mornings 😅). I do it because someone needs me at that time and unfortunately non urgent appointments need to move.

I'm not only a midwife, but a mum. I am on many of the same parent and local Facebook groups you might be. I often see posts about midwives having to reschedule appointments and understand how incredibly frustrating it is. But I wanted to give you some view of our side too.....

For most of us we rent, at our own cost, a regular clinic space, Mondays and Thursdays in Linwood and Fridays in Rangiora for me. Other midwives use these spaces when I'm not there. I am also juggling other visits outside of antenatal clinic along with life and teens in general. Those of you who have seen me at some ungodly hour up on maternity after you've had your baby will know this well!! I really do not reschedule your appointment lightly 😅

Please know that when you need me for that urgent care I'm likely rescheduling others for you, just as I may have done in your pregnancy too....

So this is my view getting ready on a Saturday morning (thank you Rangiora Hospital for some flexibility!!) for the clinic I've rescheduled twice this week!

While I'm here sorting out who gets what where.... Like every Christmas holiday period I am working through.
If I don't see you before Christmas I wish you a wonderful time with whānau and friends. And if I do see you around Christmas, then what better way to spend it with new babies, whānau and love 🥰

The December, and soon to be January bookings are rolling in. This time of year can be notoriously hard to find a midwife. If you are struggling to find a midwife over this period please contact the Midwifery Resource Center, 033652789. They work hard to find a midwife for every hapū māmā through their Festive List.
Personally I don't take bookings with EDD's from 15th Dec to 15th Jan, unless you are a return client. This māmā likes to hang out with her babies, even if they think I'm old and lame 😅

After a break from community midwifery for personal reasons I'm coming back!! There have been some changes with antenatal clinics to be held in Rangiora and East Christchurch.
Please feel free to contact, refer and recommend away again🥰

Everyone who sees me in clinic has probably met my normal helper, Freya. But today there was a switch up with Mischief joining us!
Please remember my clinic space is in my home and often our furry family visit. Always let me know if you are scared of or allergic to the dog or cats so I can make sure their not in here when you arrive 🥰

Anyone who has asked me about having our using a doppler to listen to pēpi heartbeat will know I do not recommend them and list many of the same concerns as this article (even though it's Stuff).
If you have concerns about your pēpi wellbeing or movements then please call your midwife; We have the student loans to match the extensive knowledge of listening and interpreting fetal heart rates

Medical watchdog in Australia investigates the danger of at-home foetal heart monitors after stillbirths and a neonatal death were linked to their use.

Do you have a Pēpi Pod that you are no longer using?

Currently there is a shortage of pēpi pods from the manufacturer.

We have a recycling scheme where anyone who has a pēpi pod they no longer need can return it to PIPS (56a Shortland Street) or to us here at Te Puawaitanga ki Ōtautahi Trust and you will receive a small koha as thanks. We then clean these and allocate a new bedding pack so they can be put back into the community to keep our pēpi safe.
