🌊 Nippers Update – This Sunday Cancelled 🌊

Hi everyone — we’ve had to make the difficult call to cancel Nippers this Sunday.

While the cleanup is tracking well, it’s likely to run for several more days, and there are still too many hazards along the waterline for our little people to train safely.

🚩 Beach safety update:
We do have lifeguards in the Patrol Tower, however the Red & Yellow flags can’t be safely put out yet. Swimming at the town beaches is at your own risk.

✅ What’s next:

👀 Keep your eyes peeled for a possible Friday Night Nippers on Friday 16th — details to come.

🏁 Sunday 18th Jan = Gisborne Junior Carnival
There will be no Nippers session, but we encourage everyone to come down and enjoy cheering on all the kids who are aged 7 years +!

🤞 Fingers crossed we’re back to normal by Sunday 25th Jan

We’ll keep you updated as best we can, and we apologise for the unavoidable disruption to the Nippers programme.
Thanks for understanding Midway members, enjoy the summer weather somewhere safe☀️ and we’ll see you soon!

p.s The Members Lounge is still available for members to enjoy

🚫 Overflow notification

Following yesterday's heavy rainfall, emergency sewer valves at Oak Street (Taruheru River) and Gladstone Road Bridge (Turanganui River) were opened at 7pm on 29 December and closed at 7.30am this morning to prevent sewage backing up into people’s homes and causing a significant health risk.

We’ve managed to avoid overflows for nearly 12 months but with the extreme rain yesterday it’s something we have to do only when it’s absolutely necessary and only in the areas with issues.

The discharge is heavily diluted with rainwater, but may still pose a health risk.

🔴 Warnings affect only Waikanae Beach and our 3 city rivers

⚠️ We advise:
❌ No swimming in rivers or directly adjacent beaches
❌ No fishing or shellfish gathering in affected areas
⏰ Wait at least 5 days after valves close and warning signs are removed

✅ Want to swim close to the city? Head to Midway Beach, Wainui or Kiwa Pools

Please note: We're taking a well-earned break and won't be responding to comments for now. We'll catch up with you in the New Year – see you there! 😊🎊
