With heavy rain occurring across Tairāwhiti, there is an increased risk of nasty germs and chemicals in our rivers, lakes, and beaches as well as areas that have flooded. To help keep you and your whānau safe:
⚠️ Avoid contact with Gisborne’s 3 rivers and Waikanae Beach for the next 5 days and avoid swimming, fishing or gathering kaimoana in rivers, streams and beaches for at least 48 hours after heavy rain has stopped. This is because there’s an increased risk of contamination from stormwater and sewage. Follow Gisborne District Council for more info.
⚠️ Wash and dry your hands thoroughly after any contact with floodwater, flood contaminated items or mouldy things.
⚠️ Try to keep tamariki and animals away from previously flooded areas or anything flood water might have touched in your whare until it’s either been cleaned or removed.

If you have flooding at your home, business or community space:
✅ Before you start cleaning up, put on protective clothing. Wear a mask, rubber gloves, sturdy shoes, and clothing to cover your skin. Cover up any cuts if you have them.
✅ Clean up, drain, and dry the inside as quickly as possible. If the weather is fine, take everything that is wet and put it outside to dry. Throw away contaminated belongings that can’t be cleaned.
✅ Throw away all food and drinking water that has been touched by floodwater, including food and water stored in plastic containers
✅ Do not eat kai from your garden if it has been flooded. Clean up and remove the debris from your garden. If you have it, sprinkle your garden with garden lime.

Summer days are officially over – we jump at the chance to enjoy time with whānau and friends – and enjoy the beautiful waters of Aotearoa over a long weekend.

A quick mission to the coast, an early fish, a swim, a dive.

These are moments that feel easy, familiar - and often, unplanned. But these are also the moments where risks can quietly increase.

Because too often, people head out alone.

In Aotearoa’s waters we must expect the unexpected. If you are by yourself, there’s no one to help you when things go wrong.

The conditions may be changing but the risk does not.

Water Safety New Zealand is asking all New Zealanders to make one simple decision on public holiday weekends and every weekend:

Love the water? Share it with a mate.

When something unexpected happens – and it can happen fast – having someone there can make all the difference.

Go together. Come home together.

Know your limits and the conditions

Winter is approaching. Protect yourself and your family.

Flu vaccines are available starting today, 1 April, to safeguard you and your community this winter.

Alongside flu, Covid, and whooping cough also spread more easily in colder months. Immunisation effectively reduces severe illness, hospitalisation, and the spread of winter viruses.

✅ Flu vaccines available now
✅ Covid vaccines year-round; ensure you’re up-to-date before winter
✅ Free vaccines for those aged 65+, anyone who is pregnant, and people with certain health conditions.

👶 Protect pēpi this winter
Whooping cough (pertussis) can be serious for babies. Pregnant women should get immunised to pass some immunity to newborns until they receive their own immunisations at 6 weeks. (Ensure baby's immunisations are timely!)

You can book vaccines at many pharmacies, GPs, Hauora Māori, and Pacific health providers, as well as some midwives and community vaccinators.

📅 Book your vaccination online at 👉 bookmyvaccine.health.nz

In addition to vaccination, prevent winter illness by staying home if unwell, washing hands frequently, and practicing good hygiene.

HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common viruses in the world. For many people it causes no harm, but it can lead to several preventable cancers.

✅ The HPV vaccine is the best protection against HPV. It’s a safe and effective way to protect people of all genders.

💙 The HPV vaccine is free for people aged 9 - 26. Most young people are offered the vaccine at school, usually in Year 7 or 8. This is the best time to vaccinate and get long lasting protection.

🏫 Missed it at school? You, or your whānau, can still catch up. It’s easy to get the HPV vaccine from your local healthcare providers. You can also book online through Book My Vaccine.

👫HPV affects everyone. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer caused by HPV, but it’s not the only one. Around a third of HPV related cancers affect men.

🫶When everyone is vaccinated, it helps protect the whole community.

ℹ️ Find out more and book your vaccine today (link in the first comment).

Thinking about stripping that old paint this weekend? You know the one, it’s been bugging you for ages and today finally feels like the day. Before you start sanding or scraping, take a moment to protect your whānau 💛

🏠 Homes and buildings painted before 1980 may contain lead-based paint on the inside and outside. When disturbed, the lead turns into dust that can make tamariki, pēpi, kaumātua, pets and you really, really sick. Below are some helpful tips to keep everyone safe.

🏠 If you’re working inside
✅ Before sanding
- Remove curtains and furniture
- Cover carpets and floors
- Chuck on gloves and a mask (wearing PPE is key)
✅ After sanding
- Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth to trap dust
- Use a commercial vacuum cleaner (not a household broom)

🏠 If you’re working outside
✅ Before sanding
- Close all windows and doors
- Lay down a ground sheet
- Chuck on gloves and a mask (wearing PPE is key)
- Cover your māra / garden to prevent contamination
✅ After sanding
- Carefully collect and bag all paint flakes
- Small amounts can go out with household rubbish or to the tip
- If you’re unsure, check with

When sanding or cleaning up, make sure whānau and pets not wearing mask or gloves (PPE) stay well away. Once you’re finished for the day:
✅ keep your mask and gloves on
✅ change out of your work clothes and place in a laundry bag before removing PPE
✅ wash clothes separately.
