Say hello to heart-loving Hawthorn berries… nature’s little red powerhouse ❤️🌿

Used for centuries in herbalism, Hawthorn berries are known for their powerful support of cardiovascular health - helping to strengthen the heart, improve circulation, and regulate blood pressure.

Packed with antioxidants like flavonoids, they protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, keeping your heart in tip-top shape.

Hawthorn is often used in tinctures, teas, and syrups, and pairs beautifully with herbs like motherwort or hibiscus for a nourishing heart tonic. 💓

Herb of the week: Raspberry leaf - the unsung hero of women’s wellness 🍃💫

While the fruit gets all the glory, the leaves of the raspberry plant have long been used in herbal medicine, especially for supporting the female reproductive system. Rich in vitamins and minerals like iron, magnesium, and B vitamins, raspberry leaf is known to help tone the uterus, ease menstrual cramps, and support a smoother menstrual cycle.

It’s a go-to herb during pregnancy too, especially in the second and third trimesters (always check with a qualified herbalist first!). Commonly enjoyed as a tea, this gentle yet powerful plant ally is a staple in many women’s herbal blends.

A little leaf with big benefits. 🌿💕

Come along to our next Spring workshop at the Glenorchy Hall supper room, on Saturday September 20th!

🌿 Forage for willow along the Glenorchy Lagoon walk - always a really fun thing to do. Willow is so accessible (and useful!)

🌿 Learn about the history of willow as a healing and magical medicine as well its chemistry and what makes it so beneficial for your health

🌿 Learn how to make your own willow bark tincture or tea - and take home something you have made!

These workshops are always really fun and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Herbal remedies tend to be especially helpful for the treatment of chronic, ongoing conditions and are often combined with dietary and lifestyle advice to improve and maintain health on many levels.

I see patients / clients for holistic health consultations including hands-on healing in the setting of a beautiful herb garden surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Southern Alps. It is a place of peace and tranquillity and I have set the intention that it also be a focus for healing.

Another clinic is now open in Frankton at Align studios, Remarkables Park - please see the Appointments page on my website for more information!

Come and learn about Herbal Medicine at this course consisting of 6 workshops. You will have the opportunity to harvest herbs in season at the Sherwood Garden and learn about the principles of Wild Crafting.

We will process and manufacture herbal remedies so that you can learn how to make your own herb teas, tinctures and vinegars. We will delve into the rich history of herbalism and also explore the science that links ancient and traditional herbal lore to modern medicine.

You can buy a ticket for the whole course of 6 workshops (limited to 10 participants) or there are a limited number of separate tickets available for each individual workshop.

If you would like to join, send me a message. 🌿💚

For those that are new here, my name is Fiona McQueen, and as a retired medical practitioner and specialist physician, I have 40 years of experience in the traditional Western medical approach to health and disease.

For many years I have also studied alternative healing techniques from a holistic, mind-body perspective and for the last 5 years I have studied herbalism. I completed “The Community Herbalist” qualification under the mentorship of Isla Burgess MSc and am now a member of the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists (NZAMH). I incorporate meditation and prayer, yoga and naturopathy into my own regular health routine along with mindful eating of a largely organic, wild-food diet.

My focus is now on exploring herbal medicine. The use of plants for the treatment of disease underpins the modern science of pharmacology but its roots (intended pun) are ancient going back to prehistory and recorded by such civilisations as the Sumerians and Egyptians.

If you would like to meet or book an appointment, send me a message or head to my website!

Flower of the week! Say hello to Diascia - the delicate little flower that brings big charm to your garden. 🌸🌿

With its soft, cascading blooms in shades of pink, coral, and apricot, Diascia is a favourite for adding colour and texture to garden beds, borders, and hanging pots.

Bonus: It’s low-maintenance, long-flowering, and loved by pollinators 🐝💕

Herb of the week!

Say hello to Marjoram: a humble herb with powerful healing properties 🌿🫶

Traditionally used in Mediterranean herbalism, marjoram is a favourite for supporting both gut and respiratory health. It’s packed with antioxidants, helps soothe digestion, reduce bloating, and calm inflammation in the body. When it comes to the respiratory tract, marjoram has gentle expectorant qualities that can ease congestion and support clear breathing. 💚

Whether brewed as a tea, added to meals, or used in herbal blends, this aromatic herb is as therapeutic as it is flavourful.

Small leaf, big benefits 🌱✨
