On Sunday, I attended a training day at Karapiro with David Galbraith, current performance coach with All Blacks Sevens, Golf NZ, and Olympic athletes, with a 20 year history in performance coaching.

I cannot recommend it highly enough, it has the potential to be lifechanging, across all areas of life. It is for anyone, not just athletes, and applies as much to being a parent, partner, or just happy human as it does to high performance sport.

I liked these thoughts by Robert Glazer, following Cornell University's rejection of a resolution to mandate trigger warnings for potentially traumatic course content. The problem being, that one, the popular definition of trauma has expanded to include anything that causes us discomfort, trigger warnings havent been shown to improve mental health, and avoidance of discomfort is not psychologically healthy anyway.

There is a need for greater mental health resources to support those who have been actually traumatised to recover, and to build resilience in young people and adults to better tolerate discomfort in all its forms.

Trigger warnings have become increasingly popular, especially in education. However, these warnings harm mental health and resilience

Remembering what my office looked like prior to being gutted by fire on 23 December… It took some self coaching to spend much of Xmas Eve day going through the ruins, and get myself in the right head space to race the street circuit at Whanganui on Boxing Day. I beat my previous PB by 2 seconds.

I don’t get everything right but I do use the same skills I teach to others .

How much of motorcycling is in your head, especially when it comes to winning races? In this Issue, we chat with Hamilton-based clinical psychologist and motorcycling nut Nick Lascelles about his company, Upshift Psychology.

For many people, riding a motorcycle is a stressful business. It's not that they don't know how to do it, but there are lots of other factors twirling around in their head, distracting them from the job at hand. 'What if I fall off?’ ‘What if I stall it?’ ‘What if blue riding jeans are now suddenly not in fashion?’ Okay, I made that last one up, but you get my drift. And if you’re riding at a track day or, say, racing for a national championship, your mental state can play as big a part in the success of your day as getting the suspension settings right or choosing the correct tyre pressures.

As a sports psychologist who is also passionate about his own sport, there are some great opportunities to apply what I know! I was presented with an "opportunity" in the last week, after falling off a roof and injuring ribs, right in the middle of a critical stage of my preparation for racing season. It prompted me to review what is helpful for dealing with injuries, to push me to practice what I preach, and hope it helps others.

When an athlete is injured, there are a number of possible responses that may affect the quality, speed, and experience of recovery. For the injured athlete, the injury represents a setback, an event...
