Hamilton Mental Health Awareness Week To celebrate and raise awareness for Mental Health in Kirikiriroa, Aotearoa

01/10/2021

Its day 5 of MHAW and today we encourage you to come together and reflect 😌

Take a moment to stop and think back on the things you learnt this week, how did taking time to korero impact you, and if you werent able to how can you reach out in a 'you-friendly' way?

Try sharing kai or having a cuppa, sending a message or making a phone call and/or have a face to face catchup if time and covid levels allow. Dont forget to connect with yourself and notice what aspects of your wellbeing may need a little extra manaaki.

Throw kindness around like glitter (it gets everywhere and little pieces can be found weeks later!)🌟

It’s day 3! How are you feeling today?
We hope you manage to get outdoors for a yarn in nature yesterday and enjoyed whatever this spring weather threw at you!

Today’s theme is ā€œHave a kōrero about Te Whare Tapa Whā - Toku Whare Tapa Whāā€

Now that we're halfway through MHAW, why not use this day to explore your wellbeing through Te Whare Tapa Whā and have a kōrero with a colleague/friend/whanau about what you learn? Consider the four pou and think about the different ways you can boost your wellbeing.

Can you and your colleagues explore your wellbeing through Te Whare Tapa Whā today?

Here's a few ideas to inspire you:
* If you're in an office or shared workspace, get hoamahi together and have each corner of the room represent one of the four dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Whā. Ask them to stand in the corner of the dimension they feel is strongest for them at the moment. They might like to share why they chose this dimension with the group. Aucklanders, you could do this activity over video-call instead and take turns to share!
* Take a moment for your wairua with your team by trying these Te Ao Māori mindful breathing exercises or by downloading and printing our Mindful Colouring template.
* Add a song to our MHAWNZ Spotify playlist. It might be a song you love to work out to for your tinana (body), that uplifts your wairua (spirit), soothes your hinengaro (mind), or a whānau or team favourite! Or just tune in and listen to the songs that make others feel good.

An oldie but a goodie 🄰

Yesterday we told you to take extra care of yourself to avoid the back to work blues. One way to do so is to take some time to yourself throughout the day. Karen Horneffer-Ginter has created this great poster illustrating some simple ways we can all find joy every day. Try to work a few of these into your working day, and enjoy the wellbeing boost they bring. You can buy a print of this poster here: http://www.fullcupthirstyspirit.com/product.php?id=POSTER50WAYS

Kia ora koutou te whānau,

It's Day 2 of MHAW! We hope you kicked off the week with a bang yesterday and that you were able to reconnect with someone you care about.

TODAY'S THEME:

Have your lunch outside with a friend or hoamahi/colleague, take notice of the
nature around you. Even if you work outdoors, it’s great to take a break and
spend some quailty time together outside of your work space.

Connect with the whenua; grab some mates and get into the great outdoors - go on a bush walk, walk up your local maunga, breathe in the salty fresh air of the moana. Take time to kōrero and get to know each other whilst you’re there.

Head down to your local beach with a friend or whānau member and pick up any rubbish you come across. It’s a great way to spend quality time together outside and keep Aotearoa beautiful! Check out the Department of Conservation
website for more ideas.

Take tamariki on a nature walk and get them to point out the things they see, smell and hear. Ask them how being in nature makes them feel. Or, head to the school field, park or your backyard and have tamariki lie on the grass and do this tummy breathing Sleeping Statues activity from the Sparklers website.

Have a cuppa and a kōrero in the garden with your whānau, listen to the birds, be present and enjoy each other’s company. You might like to take off your shoes and feel the grass beneath your feet.

Go outdoors, snap a photo of some nature that catches your eye and send it to someone to brighten their day or post it on Hamilton Mental health awareness week page.

It’s day 1 of mental health awareness week! 🤩

Today’s theme is: ā€œReconnect with someone you care about – He hononga tangata, he hononga arohaā€. When life gets busy it’s easy to forget to check in with the people in our lives, but having a korero with others nurtures our relationships and helps us to feel happy, connected and secure. Over time these chats help us to understand each other better and ensure we have people we can count on when times are tough.

Ways to reconnect:
- Check in with whanau you haven’t spoken to in a while. Have a chat on the phone, send them a text or catch up face to face if you can.
- Book a korero with a friend or family member via Tip Top’s campaign for MHAW – you could win a Bottomless Cone if you’re lucky!
- Look back through your photos and share a happy memory to reconnect with someone you’ve lost touch with.
- Think about whether there is someone in your life who may be going through a tough time. Take time to korero, ask them how they are, empathise and listen 🄰

This year's mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is all about connecting with the people in our lives, and taking time to Korero. A little chat can go a long way!
