⚠️ CIVIL DEFENCE SEVERE WEATHER ALERT ⚠️
A State of Emergency has been declared for the Waikato and areas of the BOP region as a proactive step ahead of Cyclone Vaianu, expected this evening. A big thank you to the different organisations and agencies, volunteers and community groups working hard to ensure that we stay safe.
This decision has been made due to the likelihood of significant impacts across the area, including damaging winds, flooding and disruption to power and transport networks.
What you can do now:
• Stay at home if it is safe to do so
• Get a grab bag ready
• Plan for possible power outages
• Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts
• Be ready to evacuate if required
What to include in your grab bag:
• Medication
• Warm clothing
• Important documents
• Supplies for babies and pets
Important safety advice:
• If your life, house or someone is in danger, call 111
• Do not wait for official warnings, conditions can change quickly
• Avoid beaches and coastal areas
• Stay away from floodwaters and unstable land
