Whakatane dairy farmers Alan and Wendy Law entrusted us to establish the first Total Replacement Therapy trial on their farm back in October 2019. Two-and-a-half years later, they have reduced synthetic nitrogen from 180 units/N per ha, to a mere 35 units/N per ha, without loss of profit or production.

So, it only seems right that Wyndlea Farm is where we hold the 2022 Kiwi Fertiliser Total Replacement Therapy Bay of Plenty Field Day, on April 7.

☘ REGISTER NOW FOR THE 2022 KIWI FERTILISER FIELD DAYS ☘

To be held on April 6 (Waikato) and April 7 (Bay of Plenty), the field days will cover the Total Replacement Therapy 8-step plan to profitably reduce nitrogen, leaching, and methane, drought mitigation and carbon sequestering.

Keynote speaker Dr Lucy Waldron, animal nutrition expert, will speak about how farmers can manipulate feed to reduce emissions.

She will be joined by Waikaitu Ltd’s Brett Halliday, who will speak about biological enhancement in the soil, and Paul Daly of EMNZ, who will speak about the importance and activity of microbiology.

Kiwi Fertiliser Managing Director Ron McLean will also discuss the importance of soil audits and the reason for our preference to use Perry Labs to carry out our tests in Missouri in the United States.

Long before Total Replacement Therapy was established, the foundation of David Law's work as a biological farm consultant could be abbreviated to a simple but rarely understood concept: the Bio-Circle.

Find out how Total Replacement Therapy was born to give more focus to each part of a biological farm management plan.

☘ GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT ☘

Waikaitu Ltd General Manager Sales and Marketing Brett Halliday will speak about biological enhancement in the soil at the Kiwi Fertiliser field days to be held April 6 (Waikato) and April 7 (Bay of Plenty).

As we know, biology is the cornerstone of healthy soil; biological enhancement products make sure the biology is well-fed and performing to its best ability.

Naturally occurring bio-stimulants and the synergistic combination of over 70 key trace elements make the Waikaitu product range a superior soil and plant feeder.

These bio-enhancers help increase photosynthesis, nutrient uptake and immune response; help prevent chemical and environmental induced stress; feeds beneficial soil biology and improves the health of the entire plant from the roots up.

☘️*GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT*☘️

Total Replacement Therapy calls on industry specialists to help us deliver the most up-to-date information and advice to our clients.

The keynote speaker at the Kiwi Fertiliser field days in April is Dr Lucy Waldron, an expert on animal nutrition and how farmers can manipulate feed to reduce emissions.

Dr Waldron is the director of LWT Animal Nutrition Ltd. Having completed a BSc (Hons) Degree in Biological Sciences (specialising in animal physiology, biochemistry and microbiology), Dr Waldron’s work has taken her to more than 55 countries, giving her broad experience of feeding practices, research requirements, nutrition, diet formulation, feed raw materials and commercialisation of animal feeds.

The 8-step Total Replacement Therapy programme goes deeper than soil and fertiliser; balancing animal nutrition is a key part of ensuring all management aspects work together to ensure the best possible outcome.

In short: we work on the soil, and once we get the feed grown, Dr Waldron comes in and shows us how to make the most of it.

The Waikato field day will be held at the Ngahinapouri property on which brothers Chris and Mike Reymer sharemilk, on April 6; and the Bay of Plenty field day at Alan and Wendy Law’s farm at Edgecumbe, on April 7.

The Kiwi Fertiliser field days held this April will outline the 8-step programme that has helped farmers reduce nitrogen application and leaching without a loss of profit or production.
Kiwi Fertiliser Managing Director Ron McLean says they have proved, under the Total Replacement Therapy Programme, that farmers can reduce their reliance on synthetic nitrogen, growing more dry matter of better quality with only 40 units of N applied annually.
“The first of the 8 steps is to get a Perry Agricultural Lab (PAL) Soil Audit to see where the phosphate, sulphur, cations and trace element levels are sitting," Ron says.
“The key is getting the base saturation percentages of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium in the soil balanced out, with the pH sitting at 6.3-6.4 - which is when the biological inoculants work their very best.
“Animal nutrition is the next step once the soil is balanced and the feed is grown.”
Field days will be held in Waikato on April 6 and Bay of Plenty on April 7. For more information follow our page, or to register for a field day, email Ron McLean at ronmac@kiwifertiliser.co.nz or David Law at david@forwardfarming.co.nz.

Total Replacement Therapy is kicking off 2022 with two field days demonstrating the next step in how we can give farmers the tools to navigate the upcoming Emissions Trading Scheme or He Waka Eke Noa changes with as little disruption as possible.

To be held in Waikato (April 6) and Bay of Plenty (April 7), we will present a range of speakers on animal nutrition, reducing emissions, and getting the best use from a biological system with biological additives and enhancers.

With 30 farms now on the Total Replacement Therapy Programme nationwide, we are continually improving and evolving the programme to ensure we are ahead of the game – and to ensure farmers are in the best place possible to meet the changes to the way they farm.

The Waikato field day will be held at the Ngahinapouri property on which brothers Chris and Mike Reymer are sharemilkers, on April 6; and the Bay of Plenty field day will be held at Alan and Wendy Law’s farm at Edgecumbe, on April 7.

Keep an eye out for more information to come on our page.

“We’ve been working with Kiwi Fertiliser’s Marg Addison for five years and we feel we are now starting to realise good results.

We had some common pasture w**ds that were being controlled with spraying, and Marg suggested we try Total Replacement Therapy to balance the soil and discourage w**ds from growing.

We agreed to trial Total Replacement Therapy on 50ha of the farm, with the hopes of increasing soil biology while reducing w**d growth and synthetic nitrogen use.

We increased that area this season by 50ha, then treated another 50ha this autumn, and now currently have 150ha under the Total Replacement Therapy programme.

We didn’t see an immediate change, but we are now seeing observable, significant results.

We no longer use chemical sprays and we have less w**ds than previously, with a continuing declining w**d population, so we believe it is having an effect.

Our pasture is denser, with more clover, and the herd grazes the paddocks more evenly.

We have also reduced synthetic nitrogen from 250kg/ha five years ago to 93kg/ha today.”

From small seeds grow big ideas

The first iteration of what was to become the Total Replacement Therapy method was implemented on David Law’s family farm 17 years ago, due to a passion and belief that more grass can be grown with less synthetic nitrogen.

Today, the unique and groundbreaking Total Replacement Therapy method is the result of a team of international specialists combining their expertise in soil biology, chemistry, agronomy and nutrition.

The Total Replacement Therapy method has been fine-tuned, resulting in a procedure that allows farmers to reduce or eliminate their synthetic nitrogen use while growing more grass, at less cost, and in a dramatically reduced timeframe.

Team leaders – Forward Farming managing director David Law, Kiwi Fertiliser general manager Ron McLean, and Terragen Biotech New Zealand general manager Karl Stokes - have worked tirelessly to closely analyse what makes a farm produce its own nitrogen, sequester carbon, and reduce methane and leaching.
