🌪️ **Cyclone Vaianu Update – Are You Ready?** 🌧️
With Cyclone Vaianu approaching, (where appropriate) now is the time to prepare and protect what matters most — our whānau, our homes, and our communities especially those close to coastal, rural and large water areas💛
⛈️ MetService New Zealand have issued an Orange strong wind warning for our district from 10am to 10pm on Sunday as Cyclone Vaianu approaches.
We may see Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
Now’s the time to get prepared at home:
✔ Secure outdoor furniture and anything that could blow around
✔ Clear gutters and drains
✔ Charge phones and check torches
✔ Make sure you have enough food, water, and essentials
✔ Plan ahead in case travel is disrupted
⚠️ Take extra care on the roads and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to flooding or slips.
Being ready doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few simple steps can make a big difference:
🔦 **Get your essentials sorted**
Make sure you have enough supplies for at least 3 days:
• Water (at least 3L per person per day)
• Non-perishable kai 🥫
• Torch + spare batteries
• Power banks for your devices 🔋
• First aid kit
🏡 **Secure your home**
• Bring in or tie down outdoor furniture
• Clear gutters and drains
• Check roofs, windows, and doors
• Park vehicles away from trees
📱 **Stay informed**
• Keep an eye on weather updates
• Follow official alerts and evacuation advice
• Keep your phone charged and on hand
👨👩👧👦 **Look after each other**
• Check in on kaumātua and neighbours
• Make a plan with your whānau in case you need to evacuate
• Know where you can go if it’s not safe to stay home
🚗 **Be ready to move if needed**
Have a grab-and-go bag with:
• Important documents
• Medications
• Warm clothes & blankets
• Baby and pet supplies
