Well, thanks to a great bunch of people, we managed to keep to our target, get the crop picked, and off to Lavender Hill Farm in Coatesville to get it distilled. While we had a smaller crop than in previous years ( some root rot, some trampling by cattle and no replacement planting) we had a return of 29 mls of oil per Kg of plant matter. We can tell you that while we had a pleasant journey up there, the return journey was wonderful. The plant matter that had been distilled came home with us and will be mulch, but it was still warm and smelled amazing!! Of course, along with our precious bottle of oil we also got Aquasol. If anyone is wanting oil, aquasol or Monster spray, do make contact. Thank you everyone for helping to make our last harvest so memorable.

The lavender is blooming nicely, I picked some to have inside the house yesterday. It is lovely, and the room now smells of pine ( Christmas tree) and lavender.
Weeding is about to start, and we will use an organic w**d spray this year, my hands are just not up to the hours needed to be w**d free. Harvest is on track for maybe mid January.

What to do during the "down time" of Lockdown? Start trimming back bushes of lavender, picking the flowers that have bloomed late, trimming back the straggling or dead branches, then taking some cuttings.
Only problem was that my electric trimmer was flat and the charger was missing. An hour or so later, a few blisters and a snipped finger from the secateurs, I gave up. Half a row done....only 10 or so more to be done. Maybe this weekend?

It is almost Harvest time folks. Weeding is in full swing, which is easier this year following my carpal tunnel surgery. Next Saturday 18th January, from around 10am, we will be out there in the field picking the lavender. The distillation will take place in Riverhead, north of Auckland, a day or so later. All are welcome to come along on Saturday, bring hat, water bottle and we will have food and drink. Stay for half an hour or longer, it will be great to have you join us.

Ahhh, the smell of lavender is amazing! Picked today, this will dry quickly and continue to be fragrant for months !

I will be making more lavender and wheat bags over the next few weeks as my supplies are low. Great for warming the bed, easing aches and pains and snuggling with. With the lavender releasing its wonderful aroma along with the warmed wheat, relaxing is so much easier. These are $10 each.

Have just arrived home from our trip to Coatesville/Riverhead to get our lavender distilled by the lovely folk at Lavender Hill. With all the rain this year we had lost quite a few plants, but our overall yeild was only a smidge less than last year's and smells divine! We are a chilled out pair after driving up there with a big sack full of fragrant lavender, and driving back with sack full of freshly steamed plant material that was smelling amazing!!!! Thanks once again to those who helped with w**ding, harvesting and the distillation. This oil now sits in a dark place and matures for about a year.

Wow, where did that year go? It has been really eventful for us! The next big thing for us is of course the lavender harvest, which we anticipate will be the weekend of 12th and 13th of January. Will update once closer to the time. The lavender is gradually being freed from the tyranny of w**ds.. But its hard work and slow going.
