We are proud to announce that our Chairman and Founder, Fraser Sanderson, has been recognised by the New Zealand Aged Care Association at its 2016 Healthcare Excellence in Care Awards. Fraser is the inaugural winner of the TENA Legendary Contribution to the Aged Residential Care Sector Award for his outstanding contribution to the aged care sector for more than 10 years. Congratulations Fraser!

Residents have been enjoying the wonderful sunny weather that we have been experiencing. This week a team of six residents and two staff members competed in the Waikato Olympics at the Cosmopolitan Club in Hamilton. There were eight other rest home facilities present and each facility represented a different part of the world. We represented the United States of America. Pictured are our residents competing in some of the different activities of the competition.

Residents have had an enjoyable week of sunshine and activities. We were fortunate enough to have Leon Wharekura (from Billy T James band) entertain our residents at happy hour. Many of the songs he sung were from their favourite era with well-known Maori songs included. On Saturday afternoon residents helped decorate vases for a craft activity. Our interactive music group is going well thanks to Cherry and the Music Moves Me Trust.

This week residents have been busy joining in activities including daily exercise group and newspaper reading, bingo, shopping shuttle and sing-a-longs. Pictured are residents enjoying an ice cream on their Tuesday afternoon scenic van outing to Huntly.

This week residents have enjoyed the usual week of planned activities, including Presbyterian Church Service, a visit to Freedom Church for an old time movie and luncheon and a combined Birthday celebration with a sing-a-long and birthday cake. On Saturday we were privileged to have the Waikato Chorale Singers who performed to a group of nearly fifty residents. A great way to finish the week.

We have had a busy couple of weeks with activities including a van outing to Taupiri to visit a resident’s family and a cooking session with Wendy. The scones were delicious.

Residents and staff are wrapping up warmly and continuing to be involved in the weekly happenings at Cascades Retirement Resort. We have had a busy couple of weeks with activities including our yearly quiz night.

Residents enjoyed their mid-winter celebration this week. It was red, white and diamond themed. Entertainment was provided by pianist Stephen Bennett and the lunch menu was roast lamb, roasted potatoes, baby beets and a medley of green vegetables. It was followed by rhubarb crumble and chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce.

Residents have been busy this week with a performance by the Women’s Cantamus Choir who sang a variety of songs and did some skits. We are presently completing decorations for our mid-winter celebration to be held this month. Theme for this year is diamonds with red and silver décor.

Residents continue to take advantage of the selection of activities provided here at the Cascades. Wet, cold weather has seen the activities program change slightly with a focus on indoor activities. Residents do continue to make use of the shopping shuttles and weekly scenic van outings - weather permitting. Pictured are residents joining in with a group of children from Ashurst Park Playcentre who spent the morning entertaining us. There were smiles all around. Also pictured are the “Rose’s Restored” beauty therapists demonstrating the services that are available onsite.

This week has been a busy one with a number of different activities. These have included a Floral display/demonstration by Amy and a ladies morning tea to celebrate “Secretary Day”. Our administration staff enjoyed a ladies high tea with some of our residents.

Residents at Cascades Retirement Resort enjoyed a memorial service for Anzac Day celebrations on Monday 25th. The service was officiated by Padre’ Bob Short with the last post played by Stewart Bayes. An afternoon tea followed giving residents a chance to chat and reminisce.
