River Ridge East Birth Centre is celebrating 2020 - International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife by sharing stories and messages from or about our wonderful LMCs in the Waikato - next up, Mel Jeram 🌈
Hi everyone, I'm Mel Jeram and I have been an independent midwife in the Waikato for 10 years. I currently work alongside Kirstin Rouse (who is on maternity leave) and work with Maternal Instinct Midwives based at the Hub at River Ridge East Birth Centre.
Midwifery was my choice of profession and is my PASSION, and even in this difficult time I still love it just as much as I did when I chose to study all those years ago.
Recently, I ventured on a holiday to Canada to visit my son (hence this picture). My holiday was amazing but upon my return everything changed. I was put in quarantine and that put extra stress on me and my wonderful clients. Luckily, I had amazing support from colleagues and clients.
I've always found it hard to miss a birth (for whatever reason, it happens occasionally) and this was about to become a reality for me. I was still answering phones, sending emails, answering texts but just couldn’t physically be there, so even while in quarantine I was still very much being a midwife. The photos started coming in from new parents, the phone starting ringing and in my heart I knew they were in good hands. The support I received from my colleagues was very humbling. Now I'm back, out of isolation and doing what I love. I couldn’t feel more proud to be a midwife.
COVID-19 is out there, and as a medical profession we are doing everything possible to keep our clients and families safe. The staff at Waikato Hospital and River Ridge East Birth Centre have been absolutely amazing and I want to thank them for holding down the fort and putting in the extra work to help us all keep safe.
Whatever I do, wherever I go I'm super proud to say "I'm a midwife". The long hours, the sleepless nights, and the interruptions to ‘normal’ family life are all part of it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so grateful my family have supported me throughout the last 10 years, without question.
And to finish on a positive note – yesterday, I was super blessed to be able to deliver one of my best friend’s baby, at her home, surrounded by her husband and three children. She was amazing and I couldn’t be more proud of her ###x
