Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. It is not offensive to the initial practitioner. What you are doing is getting another perspective on the same problem. This can sometimes be helpful and sometimes it reinforces the first opinion.

Just because you have sought a second opinion doesn’t mean you are locked into taking it.
Seeking a second opinion isn’t disrespectful; it’s responsible. Another clinician may confirm the original diagnosis or offer a different perspective. Both outcomes are useful and empower better decision-making.
If something doesn’t sit right, give yourself permission to seek another opinion.

Meet Jess!
Jess is one of the friendly faces you’ll see at the front desk at Waikato Podiatry, and she’s all about making you feel comfortable from the moment you walk through the door.

Proud of her Croatian roots, Jess values family and community, which shines through in the way she connects with our patients every day. Outside of work, life is kept busy (and fun!) by her energetic German Shorthaired Pointer, Ida 🐾, and when she’s not chasing after her, you’ll likely find Jess out fishing with her partner, Jesse. Being on the water is her happy place. 🎣

In the clinic, Jess is our organisation queen 👑but it’s her warm, genuine approach and love of helping people that really make her shine. She’s a huge part of creating the supportive, welcoming environment we’re so proud of at Waikato Podiatry.

We’re very lucky to have her on the team. We share more about our team and clinic in our newsletter. Why not sign up to receive it http://eepurl.com/hQudLj

Today we pause to remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms on ANZAC Day.
Their courage, sacrifice, and service will never be forgotten.
We’re taking a moment to reflect, remember, and honour them, while sharing a simple tradition, enjoying our ANZAC biscuits in their honour.
Lest we forget.

It’s Stress Awareness Month

Stress doesn’t just affect your mood, it impacts your whole body. Here are 5 ways stress affects your health and tips to reduce it:
1️⃣ Sleep disruption – Stress makes it hard to fall or stay asleep.
💡 Tip: Stick to a bedtime routine & limit screens before bed.
2️⃣ Muscle tension & pain – Chronic stress can tighten muscles, especially neck, back, and shoulders.
💡 Tip: Stretch, move, or try gentle yoga daily.
3️⃣ Digestive issues – Stress can upset your stomach, causing bloating, cramps, or nausea.
💡 Tip: Eat mindfully, hydrate, and practise deep breathing.
4️⃣ Weakened immune system – Prolonged stress can reduce your body’s ability to fight illness.
💡 Tip: Prioritise rest, balanced nutrition, and regular exercise.
5️⃣ Mental health strain – Stress increases anxiety, irritability, and mood swings.

💡 Tip: Take small breaks, practise gratitude, or connect with supportive people.

Remember: managing stress is a daily habit, not a one-time fix. Even small actions can make a big difference.

Not all podiatrists are created equal

There is variation amongst all specialities, including podiatry. It has often amazed me just how much variability there is within a single profession. There are personal variances that impact how people deliver their services and apply their skills.

While podiatrists share the same core training, how they apply that knowledge varies widely. Experience, ongoing education, communication style, and clinical reasoning all influence outcomes.

Just like in any profession, skill levels and approaches differ significantly.

Take time to research your podiatrist’s experience and approach before booking.

Plantar fasciitis can be stubborn, but the good news is, there are practical ways to reduce pain and improve comfort 👣

Early treatment is all about calming the irritated tissue and reducing strain on the plantar fascia.
That doesn’t always mean stopping everything. Often, relative rest and activity modification is enough. Tweaking what you’re doing (rather than doing nothing at all) allows the tissue time to settle and heal.

Simple strategies can make a big difference:
🦶Rolling your foot over a frozen water bottle can help reduce inflammation and ease soreness.
🦶Plantar fascia strapping provides immediate support and often gives noticeable relief in the early stages.
🦶Massage under heat, combined with a topical anti-inflammatory gel, can reduce local stiffness and tenderness.
🦶Stretching is essential, particularly calf stretches. Tight calves increase stress through the heel with every step.
🦶Footwear is also key. Supportive, well-fitting shoes help reduce ongoing strain, while poor footwear can slow recovery.
🦶Short-term anti-inflammatory medication may also help manage pain where appropriate.

The most important thing? Don’t ignore persistent heel pain. Early, targeted treatment leads to faster recovery and better long-term outcomes.

If plantar heel pain is affecting your day-to-day comfort, book an assessment, the sooner we identify the cause, the sooner we can get you moving comfortably again.

Foot pain isn’t just a nuisance; it’s a signal. Understanding where the pain is coming from can tell us a lot about what’s going on in your feet.

The foot is complex. It has 26 bones, 33 joints, dozens of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. That means pain can show up in many ways, and the location often gives clues about the underlying cause.

Heel pain? Often plantar fasciitis or an issue with the Achilles tendon. Arch or ball-of-foot pain?

Because there are so many possibilities, assessment is key. At Waikato Podiatry, we look at the full picture: your pain patterns, your activity, your footwear, and your biomechanics. This holistic approach allows us to create a treatment plan that’s tailored to you, whether that’s activity modification, orthotics, physical therapy, or supportive footwear recommendations.

Early intervention matters. Foot pain left unchecked can worsen, leading to chronic issues or compensations elsewhere in your body. Prevention is just as important as treatment: stretching, wearing supportive shoes, managing weight, and addressing pain early can make a huge difference.

So if your feet are talking to you, don’t ignore them. The location, timing, and type of pain all matter, and a proper assessment can put you back on the path to comfort, stability, and movement without pain.

We commonly see heel pain linked to things like changes in foot posture (for example, excessive flattening or pronation), sudden increases in training or activity, weight gain, poor or worn-out footwear, long hours standing on hard surfaces, or repetitive micro-trauma that gradually overloads the tissues.

Often, it’s not one big injury.

It’s lots of small stresses adding up.

That’s why simply stretching your calves or buying a new pair of shoes doesn’t always fix it. If we don’t identify the primary driver, we’re just treating symptoms, not the cause.

At Waikato Podiatry Clinic, assessment is key. We look at how you move, your foot posture, your activity levels, your footwear, and your daily demands. From there, we can build a treatment plan that actually addresses what’s going on.

Because recovery isn’t about guessing.

It’s about understanding the “why” behind your pain, and treating that properly.

If heel pain has been lingering longer than it should, it might be time to look a little deeper. 👣

Meet Amy! 👣

With 20 years in Podiatry, she’s seen it all, from high-risk diabetic patients to elite athletes at the NZ Academy of Sports. Her love for feet started young, after getting the right treatment for her own foot pain at just 8 years old.

When she’s not helping patients, she’s showing off her own athletic side! A former national-level competitive aerobics champion, she’s also an experienced dancer and aerobics instructor. 🩰💪
A Hastings local and the middle of three sisters, she’s been part of the Waikato Podiatry family since 2010. She especially enjoys biomechanical assessments for all ages and has a wonderful following of regular patients.

Whether you’re an athlete, dancer, or just someone who wants happy, healthy feet, she can’t wait to meet you and get you moving comfortably again!
