Free Counselling for Ethnic Communities – Bay of Plenty

We’re pleased to announce that Diversity Counselling New Zealand (DCNZ) now offers free counselling and psychotherapy for migrants and former refugees from ethnic communities in the Bay of Plenty region.

Our multilingual team provides culturally responsive, professional support in 22 languages. For other languages, we use professional interpreters, making mental health care accessible for all.

A heartfelt thank you to our funders and supporters — Acorn Foundation, Bay Trust, COGS, TECT, and Tauranga City Council — for making this possible.

Yesterday, on 30 September 2025, DCNZ was pleased to present to three cohorts of Clinical Psychology students at The University of Waikato on Cultural Safety: Working with Ethnic Communities.

Over a 120-minute session, Vanisri Mills and Kaoru Tsukigi from DCNZ shared our Respectful Guidelines for Working with Ethnic Communities https://www.diversitycounselling.org.nz/cultrally-respectful-guidelines/ and engaged in meaningful kōrero about culturally safe and responsive practice.

We extend our sincere thanks to the lecturers, the director, and the students for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to the learning journey of our future clinical psychologists.

DCNZ remains committed to delivering culturally responsive and respectful services and to ongoing collaboration that strengthens support for ethnic communities. We value opportunities to share our experience and look forward to continuing these important conversations.

🌿 Mental Health Awareness Week– “Let’s Talk Support” 🌿

On Monday, 22nd September, DCNZ proudly participated in the expo held at the University of Waikato – Village Green. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with students, encouraging open conversations around mental health and wellbeing 💚

As part of our activity, we asked the students:
👉 “What is one small thing you do or would like to do each day to look after your mental wellbeing?”

Here are some of the common activities shared:
✨ Go for a walk 🚶‍♀️
✨ Listen to music🎼
✨ Talk to people, friends, family 💬
✨ Exercise / Sports Activities 🏃‍♂️
✨ Eat well and Sleep well🍎

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared your ideas, and took part in this important kōrero.

💡 DCNZ continues to participate awareness and support programmes for the community, helping to build resilience, promote wellbeing, and create spaces where everyone feels supported.

✨ Breathing Space Celebration – 31 July 2025 ✨

Over 6 weeks, 30 junior and senior students from Mangakotukutuku School participated in our Breathing Space Programme, facilitated by Vanisri Mills & Kaoru Tsukigi

The programme explored intercultural awareness, psychological flexibility, emotional regulation, cultural intelligence, leadership, and growth mindset. These may sound like big concepts, but at its heart Breathing Space is about creating a safe space where youth can connect with their inner strengths and realise the potential already within them.

🌿 The journey concluded with a vibrant youth-led celebration, featuring student performances, certificates, and the presence of peers, teachers, caregivers, and esteemed guests.

💚 A huge thank you to Pinnacle Midlands Health Network for sponsoring this programme.
To Mangakotukutuku School for their support, and to all caregivers and esteemed guests for your presence and encouragement.

Last Session-Ethnic Youth Learning Hub

We’ve wrapped up our 7-week Ethnic Youth Learning Hub for high school students, proudly funded by the Ministry of Education.

For our 7th and final celebration, we invited three inspiring speakers: Associate Professor Peter Sun, Toby Cunliffe-Steel, and Tracey Olivier.

They delivered powerful sessions that were well-received by students and left everyone feeling inspired. Together, we shared kai, celebrated connections, and reflected on the journey.

For our final session, a total of 37 young people from diverse backgrounds came together, supported by parents, caregivers, teachers, and our DCNZ team, to learn, have fun, and thrive

A huge thank you to our youth, families, and partners for helping us create inclusive spaces where ethnic youth can thrive.
