True Colours Children's Health Trust

True Colours Children's Health Trust True Colours Children’s Health Trust supports Waikato families impacted by their childs serious health condition. This number continues to grow each year.

True Colours Children’s Health Trust is a Waikato based, entirely community-funded organisation committed to supporting children with serious illness, their whānau and community during their time of need through counselling, nursing care and education. These three elements are part of a holistic approach to care, unique to True Colours, known as the Integrated Model of Care. This was developed by Cynthia Ward as a result of findings in her postgraduate research, “Children Matter: What is important to the child living with a life-threatening illness” and in response to a perceived gap in services. This model of care ensures children with serious illness and their family members can access support services and a continuum of care from the time of diagnosis through to cure, bereavement or on-going adjustment to living with a life-limiting illness. Support can commence from as early as a 20-week pregnancy scan and can continue right through to late teenage years. Since 2004, more than 1,000 families in the greater Waikato region have utilised the free service that True Colours provides. True Colours provides children with serious illness, their siblings and family members with the opportunity to engage in creative therapies including art, play and music, along with workshops, presentations and support groups facilitated by our committed staff. A key worker dedicated to the oversight of each child and family’s needs helps to ensure a seamless continuum of care. The Trust also works collaboratively with health professionals, schools and other community groups to promote further education and understanding of the many challenges a child with serious illness and their family may be facing. To provide this free support service for children with serious illness and their families in the community, True Colours has been entirely dependent on funds distributed by community trusts and grants, fundraising activities held by the community, and the generous support and commitment of its sponsors, donors and volunteers.

We love the kindness that we see from people within our community...like Katie and Larissa at Sun Salute Yoga! Their stray yoga mats have all found homes, and thanks to a koha for each of them, some funds have found their way to us! Thank you all for thinking of us ❤

Thanks to Leean and the team at Cleland Hancox Limited who did an amazing bake sale for Show Your True Colours Day, and raised $468 for us!

And thanks to all the people working at Union Square who showed up, got a slice of something special and added to that huge donation!

Wills Month is an annual event held in September in New Zealand to encourage adults to create or update their wills. It serves as a reminder of the importance of having a legally binding document that outlines your wishes for the distribution of your assets and care for your loved ones after your death. Creating a will provides peace of mind, helps avoid potential complications for your family, and offers an opportunity to leave a charitable gift to causes you care about. And it may not be as much as you think to get one.

Why create a Will?

• Peace of Mind:
Having an up-to-date will provides comfort and certainty that your affairs will be handled according to your wishes.

• Protect Your Loved Ones:
A will ensures that the people and things you care about are provided for and that your family can access your funds to manage your estate.

• Avoid Complications:
Without a will, your estate may be distributed according to the law, which might not align with your preferences and could lead to delays and costs for your family.

• Appoint Guardians:
A will is the legal mechanism for nominating guardians for your children under 18.

• Leave a Legacy:
Wills Month also encourages people to consider leaving a charitable gift to causes they support, providing a lasting impact on the community.

What does a will include?
• Instructions for distributing your assets (your estate).
• Appointment of executors to manage your estate.
• Nomination of guardians for minor children.
• Your funeral preferences.
• Charitable gifts or bequests.
• Instructions for your digital assets, which are now increasingly valuable.

We use Harkness Henry for anything legal and couldn’t recommend them more, so if you want to discuss your will, give them a call today.

Happy Father's Day!
To all the dads and father figures, however that looks in your family.

We know it can be a day of mixed emotions, for some family's a day to celebrate, and for others, it's a day filled with memories of someone who is deeply missed.

It's ok for the day to be both happy and sad at the same time.

We see you all ❤

Today is Show Your True Colours Day!

As a community funded organisation, it's important to raise our profile, as well as much needed funds. We don't like to think that there are people in the community who need our help, but don't know about us.

Days like today help raise awareness of what we do - supporting children with a serious health condition and their families - and you can help by spreading the word!

These pics are of our team making the most of the lemon tree at True Colours House for SYTC Day to make lemony themed things! Mostly food of course, but also some lemon printed tea-towels.

And because, when life gives you lemons, that's when True Colours steps in to support.

Scan the QR code to donate...or head online to www.truecolours.org.nz and click the donate button. Because no child or family, should go through hard times on their own.

Our cars, all freshly serviced and washed, thanks to the amazing team at Ingham Mitsubishi Hamilton.

Ingham's have long been supporters of ours, and thanks to them we can get out to families around the greater Waikato who otherwise can't make it in to see us.

We make a pretty cool sight driving in convoy too, though that doesn't happen very often😉

Get to know our team! This is Heidi, who has volunteered at True Colours since 2010 before joining the team fulltime in March 2021. Since the end of June, she is now our CEO.

She is passionate about leading and supporting the team in providing the care they do to children and families. And can often be found making cups of tea for parents when they come in to TC House or weeding the garden in the weekend! Taking True Colours well into the future is what drives her.
