True Colours Children's Health Trust

True Colours Children's Health Trust True Colours Children’s Health Trust supports Waikato families impacted by their childs serious health condition. This number continues to grow each year.

True Colours Children’s Health Trust is a Waikato based, entirely community-funded organisation committed to supporting children with serious illness, their whānau and community during their time of need through counselling, nursing care and education. These three elements are part of a holistic approach to care, unique to True Colours, known as the Integrated Model of Care. This was developed by

Cynthia Ward as a result of findings in her postgraduate research, “Children Matter: What is important to the child living with a life-threatening illness” and in response to a perceived gap in services. This model of care ensures children with serious illness and their family members can access support services and a continuum of care from the time of diagnosis through to cure, bereavement or on-going adjustment to living with a life-limiting illness. Support can commence from as early as a 20-week pregnancy scan and can continue right through to late teenage years. Since 2004, more than 1,000 families in the greater Waikato region have utilised the free service that True Colours provides. True Colours provides children with serious illness, their siblings and family members with the opportunity to engage in creative therapies including art, play and music, along with workshops, presentations and support groups facilitated by our committed staff. A key worker dedicated to the oversight of each child and family’s needs helps to ensure a seamless continuum of care. The Trust also works collaboratively with health professionals, schools and other community groups to promote further education and understanding of the many challenges a child with serious illness and their family may be facing. To provide this free support service for children with serious illness and their families in the community, True Colours has been entirely dependent on funds distributed by community trusts and grants, fundraising activities held by the community, and the generous support and commitment of its sponsors, donors and volunteers.

Get to know our team! This is Ziski, who has been with True Colours for nearly 2 years now.

Ziski works here as a Children's Counsellor - supporting children with a serious health condition, and sometimes their siblings. She has such a gentle and caring way about her, and the children she works with absolutely love her!

Get to know our team! This is Renee, who has been with True Colours for nearly 2 years now.

Her work here is varied - supporting parents in NICU, at home and here at TC House, along with bereaved parents and some of the teenagers we support. She often is travelling to our more rural based whanau and those in smaller Waikato towns like Te Awamutu, Tokoroa, Cambridge and Putaruru. She provides amazing and considered care for all the families she walks alongside.

She does a bit of everything here - supporting most of the NICU (newborn intensive care unit) families we support, along with teenagers & their whānau, and bereaved mums. She is calm in any situation, and passionate about the work we do here, providing the best care for all the families she walks alongside.

Get to know our team! First up is Stephen - who has been with True Colours since day one in 2004. He supports a lot of the Dad's, young men and boys we walk alongside. He is an amazing psychotherapist, a great music therapist, and brings a lot of laughter to True Colours - essential with the work we do.

So we did it. The transition we have been working on for a few years now is done, and the next chapter for True Colours is here.

Cynthia finished up on Friday, and after a well earned break, will be back as a board member, contractor and mentor. Still very much involved, but at a board and strategic level.

As with everything she does, this was a well thought out and executed transition, and I am proud to be leading such a great team.

Cynthia's vision of supporting children with a serious health condition and their whānau through the toughest of times, and listening to the voice of a child, continues. Our mantra of supporting families to stand strong doesn't change just because she isn't here on a daily basis.

Thanks to Cynthia and our amazing board for trusting me with True Colours. I am passionate about the work we do here. We have this!

Team Red donation this morning at the New Zealand Blood Service - Waikato! Such a lovely team up there who looked after us all very well. They urgently need plasma at the moment, as well as always needing whole blood donations so if you can spare some time, give them a call and book in!

Mānawatia a Matariki!

As a team, we celebrated Matariki on Wednesday at our weekly team meeting. Rosi made parāoa parai (fry bread) for morning tea - sooo good! She also included a donut version! YUM! And, a weaving activity for us, which in the spirit of connection, were shaped like jigsaw puzzles, and will be all joined together.

In the spirit of Matariki, we hope you make time today for remembrance, celebrating the present and looking to the future.

Wishing you a special day x

It was a great start to the day heading to Hautapu School with Robyn and Ben from Black Shepherd Apiaries to surprise the winner of the label competition for their new Bee-Licious Kids Manuka Honey. Congratulations Esme!

We are thrilled to have our logo on the label alongside Esme's awesome artwork, and that $1 from every jar sold will come back to us so we can continue to support children with a serious health condition and their whānau.

Look out for Black Shepherd Apiaries at your local farmers market, and support the team that supports us ❤

Thanks to the team at NES Boutique who hosted a fundraiser for us this time last month. We raised $2,395 and had an awesome time doing it! Lots of shopping and laughs were had!

As a community funded organisation, events like this make all the difference in enabling us to continue supporting children with a serious health condition and their whānau.

Thanks also to Harkness Henry for co-sponsoring the evening. And of course to all those who bought a ticket, came along and made this a great night out.
