12% of the Australian population report suffering from a common mental disorder such as depression and anxiety.

As a society, we don’t think about taking care of our mental health in the same way we do our physical health.

Here's how exercise can support you as a natural mood booster!
- Exercise releases norepinephrine, which wakes up the brain and gets it going!
- BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) protects our neurons (nerve cells in the brain) against cortisol in areas that control mood, such as the hippocampus
- Improvements in self-esteem (a component of depression), thanks to norepinephrine but also because we feel a sense of accomplishment
- Dopamine gets a boost; improving mood, feelings of wellness, and motivation, and jump-starts our attention system

In this episode, we were lucky enough to rope in NZ team leader Carmyn Barnes to have a chat with us about her experience working in New Zealand as an Exercise Physiologist!

Carmyn originally studied and worked as a biokineticist in South Africa. Coming from a country where the profession is well embedded into the health care system - to a country where most people have never heard of EP - was quite a shock to the system for Carmyn!

Luckily, thanks to the work of Carmyn and others working in the profession, things have progressed a lot over the past few years. Listen to the podcast here:

The aim is to raise awareness about obesity and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. It coincides with National Nutrition Week (9 – 15 October), to highlight the importance a healthy diet plays in a healthy lifestyle.

In South Africa, there are many factors which restrict the ease of leading a healthy lifestyle. In addition to these factors, the COVID-19 pandemic as significantly affected our ability to manage our weight. A seemingly simple lifestyle change which significantly affects weight management is physical activity.
