Sage Clinic - Rebecca Osborne, Naturopath & Herbalist

Sage Clinic - Rebecca Osborne, Naturopath & Herbalist Comprehensive healthcare, naturally Hello and welcome to Sage Clinic.

My name is Rebecca and I am a Medical Herbalist and Naturopath (BNatMed) based in the Waikato, New Zealand.

“Sage Clinic” incorporates the wisdom of traditional herbal medicine with modern day science, to bring you comprehensive health care, naturally. While herbalism is my strong point, I also use other modalities of natural medicine such as nutritional, lifestyle and exercise advice, prescriptions of practitioner-only products, bach flower remedies, iridology, homeobotanicals, massage therapy, muscle testing and functional testing. I grew up a sickly child, not knowing I had celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease where gluten in food attracts immune system cells to your gut lining and is destroyed, hence I was always tired, sickly, and irritated, but the diagnosis was always hypochondria and a behavioural problem. My experiences with the conventional medical system along with hearing so many stories of other people also feeling defeated about medical care and treatment, led me to study the advanced diploma of herbal medicine at the Waikato Centre for Herbal Medicine in 2005. I later turned this into a bachelor degree at the South Pacific College of Natural Medicine. These two qualifications have provided me with extensive knowledge in both practical and clinical application of natural medicine. I have worked in health shops and established health clinics throughout NZ since 2005, and am always upskilling with post graduate studies and extracurricular activities in my field such as Rongoa Maori, which is our traditional plant medicine in New Zealand. One of my favourite past-times to be in the bush amongst our native healing plants, which I also incorporate into my practice. I have never believed that there is "nothing you can do" when it comes to health, and natural medicine proves time and time again that there is no condition too simple or complicated, where it can’t play a hugely beneficial role. While modern medicine is great for acute illness, drugs and surgery, it does not offer much for the likes of chronic, inflammatory conditions, and natural medicine thrives in these conditions. What to Expect

At your initial appointment, I take a comprehensive case history, assessing current concerns/symptoms, health history, dietary intake, and review how every body system is functioning. I may also incorporate a few other diagnostic tools such as blood pressure, iridology, tongue/nail analysis, zinc test, muscle testing etc, and analyse any recent test results you may bring. This all paints a very good picture of what direction I am going to take with your treatment plan. At this point I will send you away with some advice to get you started, and to obtain any information I feel I may need, such as certain tests, and I may suggest further clinical/functional testing such food sensitivities, heavy metal toxicity, gut microbiome, hormone profile etc. I then combine traditional knowledge with the latest scientific research to provide you with a personalised, comprehensive treatment plan, entailing our goals, lifestyle, nutritional, herbal medicine, supplement and functional testing advice. I provide ongoing care with follow up appointments to ensure efficacy and to help you achieve your goals, one step at a time, always addressing the root cause of the problem, rather than just the symptoms. The number of follow up appointments required is variable and depends on your individual requirements. Feel welcome to call me for a free 10 minute no obligation phone call, to discuss your health concerns and to see if I am the right practitioner for you.

Oh wow this is so true. I could never tire from the world of natural medicine, research or helping people, but I’m hopeless with the business side of things 😅 (and the social media, accounting, admin, ordering, systems, website, trying to make a printer work etc side of things) 😂

This years Field Days was quite significant for me. I only really went to celebrate the fact that I am in such a different position to where I was this time last year at the field days.

I felt like my house in Hamilton was never going to sell, I wanted a lifestyle block so badly and met so many obstacles along the way. I bought a farm jersey at the field days anyway, vowing that I would be wearing it on my new farm one day!

Cut to a year later and it is my favourite jersey that I have thrashed for the last 10 months on my little farm, while I chase goats, cows and sheep, fix fences, chop up fallen trees, lug around bales of hay, chase goats, build animal shelters, paint and renovate, reinforce fences, sit around bonfires, fix and reinforce fences, and chase goats etc… 😅

It’s amazing what can change in a years time, if you are determined!

At the field days this year it absolutely poured down and I didn’t stay long, I only went for food and socks and to reminisce. Had to laugh at two girls who jumped in a display spa because they were saturated anyway… 🤣

Today has been a particularly peaceful Sunday, and I have (surprisingly) nothing urgent to do, so my house is actually nice and clean for once, and the silence is like my new favourite genre of music. I think I’ll light the fire, put my new socks on and enjoy the silence until the next thing explodes, breaks, falls, leaks, needs feeding, nearly dies or escapes…

Ahhhhh 🥰

Don’t let the winter blues get you this year team, you got this! 💪 😎

(Or get goats, they work like little sunshine vitamins too…) 🐐

When assessing the health and well-being of a person, naturopaths don’t only look at the physical aspect. An important aspect that is often overlooked is the social aspect.

Do you have a connection with your community? Do you have a connection with other humans or pets? Do you actually ever have fun?

It is amazing how many people wake up miserable, go to a job they hate, go home to housework and then go to bed, repeating that pattern all week, then on the weekends they’re too tired to have any fun.

You really must schedule things into your life that bring you joy.

I try to attend as many live comedy shows as I can. It’s a lazy way to have a great laugh while enjoying the atmosphere of tonnes of other people who are also having a great time.

I went to see Dawn French on Wednesday night, she is one of my old faves. I used to love watching French and Saunders, she often appeared in Absolutely Fabulous, but she is more commonly recognised for her role in the Vicar of Dibley.

It was a great night, she gave a lot of insight into behind-the-scenes stuff from a lot of her roles. Was funny as and really interesting.

What do you do or what could you do, to make sure that you incorporate things into your life that you find really fun and enjoy? Or is this an area in your life that needs more attention?

Worth thinking about, I reckon ☺️

Does anybody know what this tree and fruit is? My plant ID app is saying persimmon, but they really do not look like persimmon to me, they are very small, unless they suddenly get a lot bigger before ripening or something like that? 🤔

Just did a talk for a year 13 class about naturopathy.

They had to research different healing modalities and weigh up pro’s and con’s etc.

It is great to see this sort of thing being included in the health curriculum for teenagers! If I knew what a naturopath was a lot sooner in my life, I wouldn’t have remained sick for so many years.

So, I am more than happy to do talks like this, because even if I only inspire one, bored, eye-rolling, half-asleep student, then that makes me happy 🤣

There is also a lot of power in “planting the seed” and growing awareness.

One of the questions I got was “do you get any critics”, and of course I do.

There are people that say they don’t believe in it, that there is no proof natural medicine works, that everyone died before modern medicine etc. I used to get defensive and offended by comments like this, but now that I have read a lot about the history of medicine and been in this field for so long, I find it amusing and welcome comments like this so that I can discuss and de-bunk them….

Luckily it doesn’t require their belief in it for it to work; there are millions of clinical studies proving the safety and efficacy of herbal medicine; and plenty of people died from barbaric modern medicine practices, as well as from poor hygiene practices, having no running water or plumbing etc

Anyway, as part of my presentation I played this video, as it is one of my favourite insults so far… (and frankly, I agree with this one!) Enjoy!

It’s the annual NZAMH conference this weekend. We get the option to do it online these days. Saves the hassle of travel and finding accommodation etc, and I can do it from the comfort of home. I am very happy to be attending this years conference from my half-done up clinic space. It is so nice and cosy already, with lovely views, I can’t wait for it to be completed. I have rosemary oil in my diffuser to assist brain function because these conferences are always pretty intensive (but awesome), and the best part is, I can wear slippers, and no one knows…. Except for you guys now….

My shed to clinic conversion began on May 4th, fuelled by Star Wars and solar flare energy… was a big job and still lots to do but I’m pretty happy with the results so far! 🤩

Happy Waitangi Day everyone!

I’m celebrating this public holiday in New Zealand by harvesting some delicious plums and apples off my wee fruit trees.

I had no idea how delicious luisa plums are!?!

I grew yellow, red and black cherry tomatoes this year, as well as beef steak (which seem to not want to ripen yet).

Happily eating the red and yellow tomatoes, so yummy, but can’t quite bring myself to try the black ones… it seems so counter intuitive because to me, they look poisonous!? 😅

I thought they would look quite cool in salads but now I’m not so sure, haha. Also don’t know how to tell when they are ripe…

Anyone else growing these black cherry tomatoes??
