The views of Napier's Marine Parade and beyond from Ocean Hills are something else. When our guests arrive, they often say the vista takes their breath away. Many of them have taken photos of sunrises and sunsets over the years. Here's one of our favourites – the sunset over the ocean accompanied by the iconic Norfolk pines and Spirit of Napier sculpture.

Addiction is often associated with past traumas, as well as creating ongoing chaos, which can cause more trauma. We know that trauma wires the brain but we also know that our brains are capable of changing and adapting throughout our lives. What we say and do, over and over again, shapes our brain. Getting sober is a significant way to rewire your brain. It doesn't erase trauma but it gives you room to deal with it in healthy ways, and to build resilience.

Relapse is never the goal but it can happen. Actor Natasha Lyonne recently revealed she relapsed after years of sobriety. How brave of her to share this, with the purpose of comforting others who may be struggling. She wrote on social media, "Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone struggling out there, you're not alone".

And you're not. Don't let a relapse define you, or take hold of you and catapult you back into the addiction cycle. Reach out for help and get back on the sobriety track.

Not giving into a craving for alcohol, or whatever substance you're struggling with, can feel impossible. It feels like not eating when you're hungry, not drinking water when you're parched, or not sleeping when you're exhausted. It feels unbearable.

But did you know that most cravings only last for a short while? Here are 5 x tips from the expert clinicians at Ocean Hills to help you get through a trigger or craving.

1. Distract yourself physically – keep your hands busy, do something strenuous like weeding the garden, going for a walk or taking a shower. Sometimes eating a snack or drinking a large glass of water helps. Self care is critical in staying sober.

2. Contact another person in recovery or a supportive loved one or friend to share how you're feeling – this often alleviates the craving substantially.

3. Write down how you're feeling and reflect on why you don't want to act on the craving. Think about how awful you feel after using and survey the damage it's done in your life. Make a record of all the bad times your addiction has caused and look back on it regularly to keep the negative associations of drinking or using fresh in your mind.

5. Know that cravings pass and become less frequent and intense the longer you stay sober. If you sit with the craving and do some deep breathing, you might be surprised that it goes away pretty quickly.

What's the difference between alcoholism and alcohol use disorder? People get confused about these terms but generally, they're the same thing. Alcoholism is the traditional term for alcohol addiction but in recent years, it's increasingly replaced by the term alcohol use disorder. Why? Many people find the term alcoholism stigmatising and clinicians have found that it can be a barrier for people getting help.

Regardless of the label, addiction to alcohol is a complex condition and when it's severe, can significantly affect a person's physical and mental health, finances and relationships. It's almost impossible to deal with on your own and getting professional help can be crucial to getting and staying sober.

Why four weeks of rehab? Many people ask why they should stay in rehab for a month. The reasons include:

1. It took a long time – probably many years – to build a rock-solid habit and it's going to take time to turn that around. The longer you can remove yourself from your daily life for a reset that will ultimately improve your quality of life, the better.

2. It takes time for your brain and body to heal: Often the first couple of weeks of getting sober can be rough, with a lot of the important therapy work 'sinking' in the weeks following.

3. We know that people who stay for more than two weeks tend to have better long-term outcomes of sobriety.
