The commitment of a new hospital for Hawke’s Bay announced by the Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins is welcome news and long overdue.

We appreciate the work by Tuki Tuki MP Anna Lorck who has strongly pushed Hawkes Bay's need for better health services in Wellington with Prime Minister Hipkins and Health Minister Ayesha Verrall.

The issues with the existing dilapidated regional hospital are well known and we now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise the quality and capacity of health delivery for all residents across the region. This is a major project, one of the largest that will be undertaken in the region this century, and we hold firm that the best solution is building a new hospital on a green fields site such as York Road.

It enables a staged construction approach that supports a less disruptive transition from delivery of already strained services at the old hospital to York Road. The purchase of the land is only a small fraction of the overall $700-$1.1 billion build and the current site can be repurposed for much needed affordable housing.

We look forward to participating in the wide and transparent community consultation which has been signaled by Te Whatu Ora and strongly encourage the community to do the same.

Regional Recovery Agency chair Blair O'Keeffe shared his views on the future of health infrastructure saying ... “We need to find a way to establish a future-proof and fully resilient hospital and associated health infrastructure, we need to ensure housing across the region, both immediate and longer term, is planned and delivered, including in partnership with our Māori, iwi and hapū partners, in a way that meets the genuine needs of our communities.

Hawke's Bay is ready for a new hospital. in fact we've been waiting for a very long time. We urge Te Whatu Ora's chief infrastructure and investment officer, Jeremy Holman to continue to progress this at pace. We look forward to meeting Jeremy soon.
As Napier mayor Kirsten Wise says "Hawkes Bay Hospital is absolutely in need of a redevelopment... We are a city of nearly 70,000 and the current service level we receive is unacceptable."
We take it a step further and say lets develop a greenfields health campus.

It has been sad to hear the announcement that Cranford will not pursue the plan to build a new hospice on a greenfields site in Pakowhai due to the impact of the Cyclone earlier this year.
We think a greenfields site for a hospice that's closer to the main population catchments still has real merit, therefore we are suggesting that our greenfields site for a new hospital could also accommodate a hospice. The setting could be as stunning as what they had hoped as well as have broader health services on the same campus.

Following the news that Cranford Hospice for looking for a new location due to risk associated with a site in Pakowhai, the promoters of a Greenfields hospital site, say the large site can easily accommodate a hospice.

A greenfields hospital has many benefits - such as keeping the existing hospital open while a new one is being built.
Have a look at this new hospital that is being built in Tweed Valley in NSW, Australia. Notice all the amazing green space - where there will be walking trails.
This hospital will open in 2024.
