Congratulations to Dr Grace Hurdley!

Honouring Excellence in Primary Healthcare
Over the next fortnight, we’ll be sharing the stories of our Hawke’s Bay Faculty of GPs Primary Healthcare Award winners — individuals and teams who go above and beyond every day for patients, whānau, and their communities.
Our award winners were peer-nominated and each post will highlight why they were recognized and the impact of their mahi across our region. While we celebrate these award recipients, we also want to acknowledge the dedication of everyone working in primary healthcare — from general practice and community pharmacy to allied health, kaiāwhina, and support roles.

Our first recipient is Dr Grace Hurdley of Hastings Health Centre.
Recognised for her outstanding leadership and commitment to patient‑centred care, Dr Hurdley consistently goes above and beyond her clinical role to improve access, quality, and outcomes for patients and whānau.
Through her collaborative, thoughtful approach and work across the wider health system, she has helped strengthen connections, drive meaningful change, and support a more coordinated primary care sector in Hawke’s Bay.

Your mental and emotional wellbeing is important. It’s normal to feel stressed or anxious right now. Even if you have not been directly impacted, this may bring up memories and emotions from previous emergency events. Be kind and check in on your neighbours and whānau.

You can text or phone 1737 to speak to a trained counsellor. They can help if you:
- need support or advice
- have feelings of anxiety, stress, prolonged fear, hopelessness or anger, or
- you just need to talk with someone.

After an emergency, be sure to talk to someone about how you are feeling.

General Practice Lead Clinician
Are you an experienced GP ready to lead, influence, and shape the future of primary care?
We are seeking a General Practice Lead Clinician to provide clinical leadership, support quality patient care, and work closely with our multidisciplinary team to drive best practice and continuous improvement. The General Practice Lead Clinician is a well-supported leadership role with dedicated, protected time, designed for GPs wishing to develop their leadership, governance, and service-development skills while remaining clinically grounded.
About the role:
• Clinical leadership and oversight within a modern general practice, supporting problem-solving and ideas for improvement
• Working collaboratively with team leads and the multidisciplinary team to provide clinical direction for the suite
• Ensuring delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centred care that promotes equity, wellness, and improved outcomes
• Leading and contributing to service innovation, quality improvement, service redesign and strategic direction
• Supporting the Clinical Director to ensure appropriate support and supervision frameworks are in place for GPs and NPs
• Representing the business on Clinical Oversight and Advisory Committee and contributing to Hastings Health Centre’s clinical governance programme

About you:
• Vocationally registered GP
• Strong clinical judgement with a collaborative leadership style
• Passionate about high-quality, patient-centred care
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

☀️ It’s heating up Hawke’s Bay!!
With temperatures forecast to reach between 34–37°C from tomorrow through to Sunday, and warm evenings offering little relief, it’s important to stay cool, hydrated and check in on one another.

A few simple reminders:
💧 Drink water often, even if you don’t feel thirsty
🧢 Keep cool – seek shade, wear light clothing, and use fans or air-conditioning where possible
🏠 Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains during the day (if you don’t have air-conditioning) open windows and doors for air circulation
☀️ If you’re outside having fun in the sun, remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap
👥 Look out for whānau, neighbours and friends, especially older people and young children
🐾 Don’t forget your pets – make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade, and a cool place to rest. Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day
