๐Ÿ’œ Time to Screen โ€“ Bowel Screening Awareness ๐Ÿ’œ

Bowel screening can help find bowel cancer early, when it can often be successfully treated. Many people with early bowel cancer have no symptoms, which is why screening is so important.

In New Zealand, free bowel screening is available every two years for eligible people aged 58โ€“74. The test is simple, can be done at home, and could save your life.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Donโ€™t ignore your kit when it arrives in the mail - taking a few minutes now could make a big difference later.

๐Ÿ“ฎ Complete and send your test early in the week so it can reach the testing laboratory before the weekend.

โš ๏ธ If you have symptoms such as blood in your poo or ongoing changes in bowel habits, please see your GP. Donโ€™t wait for your screening test.

๐Ÿ’œ NZ Sign Language Week โ€“ Celebrating 20 Years ๐Ÿ’œ

This year marks a special milestone โ€” 20 years since New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) became an official language of Aotearoa ๐Ÿ™Œ

NZSL Week is a time to celebrate the language, culture, and identity of the Deaf community, while also encouraging all New Zealanders to learn and use NZSL in everyday life. (NZ Sign Language)

โœจ Why it matters:
NZSL is more than a language โ€“ itโ€™s a vital part of communication, connection, and inclusion. Learning even a few signs can help create a more accessible and welcoming community for everyone. (AUT)

๐Ÿ’œ Get involved:
โ€ข Learn a new sign each day
โ€ข Try fingerspelling your name
โ€ข Encourage conversations about accessibility and inclusion

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’‰ World Immunisation Week (24โ€“30 April) ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’œ

World Immunisation Week is a time to recognise the life-saving power of vaccines and the important role they play in protecting people of all ages from preventable diseases.

๐ŸŒ This yearโ€™s theme:
โ€œFor every generation, vaccines workโ€

Vaccines have safely protected whฤnau and communities for generations - and they continue to safeguard our future ๐Ÿ’œ

In Aotearoa New Zealand, immunisation is a key part of giving tamariki the best start in life. While coverage is improving, there is still work to do to ensure all children are fully protected.

๐Ÿ’œ Why immunisation matters:
โ€ข Protects against serious diseases like measles, whooping cough, and influenza
โ€ข Helps keep our communities safe, especially those most vulnerable
โ€ข Supports lifelong health and wellbeing

๐Ÿ’ฌ A good time to check in:
Flu season is a great opportunity to make sure you and your whฤnau are up to date with all recommended vaccinations.

โœจ How you can help:
๐Ÿ’œ Stay up to date with your vaccinations
๐Ÿ’œ Talk with your healthcare team if you have questions
๐Ÿ’œ Support friends and whฤnau to make informed choices

๐Ÿ“˜ For more information:

Immunisation is something we do together - for ourselves, our whฤnau, and our community ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ’œ ANZAC Day Public Holiday Closure ๐Ÿ’œ

Westland Medical Centre will be closed on Monday, 27 April in observance of ANZAC Day, as we pause to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.

We will reopen with our usual hours on Tuesday, 28 April.

๐Ÿ“ž Ka Ora Telehealth is available during this time if you need non-urgent medical support.

๐Ÿšจ If you require urgent medical care, please call 111.

Lest we forget ๐ŸŒบ

You may have noticed amongst the Red Poppies in the Medical Centre window there is an addition of Purple Poppies. The Purple Poppy symbolises and honours the brave animals who have served alongside our soldiers in times of war.
