If you've been in my chair you've heard me talk about skin quality, and it's relationship to lines and wrinkles.

I often compare the skin to different grades of paper. A thin crepe paper creases easily. A thicker card stock paper is resistant to cresing.

These images show that beautifully.

Seeing true structural skin quality improvements is my absolute favourite.

✨ Treating Melasma: 3 Things You Need to Know ✨

Melasma can be one of the most frustrating skin conditions to deal with—patches of pigmentation that don’t just fade on their own. But the good news is there are effective, evidence-based treatments available.

Here’s what you need to know:

1️⃣ There’s one gold standard treatment
Hydroquinone remains the #1 prescription option worldwide for managing melasma. Not fancy lasers, not quick fixes—it’s still the treatment dermatologists and cosmetic doctors trust most.

2️⃣ Other options can help
Dermal peels (like Cosmelan), lasers (with careful use), and medications such as Tranexamic acid can all play a role. The right combination depends on your skin and type of melasma.

3️⃣ It’s a chronic condition
Melasma is long-term. It can be improved and managed well, but it requires ongoing care and a tailored plan.

💡 In short: successful management means limiting triggers, reducing new pigment production, and tackling existing pigment—over and over again.

👩‍⚕️ At Restore Cosmed, we take a medical approach to melasma care, starting with a consultation to personalise treatment for your skin.

👉 Book your consultation today and take the first step towards calmer, clearer skin.

Like physical health - skin health thrives on consistency

Introducing the “Skin Gym”.
Dr. Cherie Wyatt-Hutana- Restore Cosmetic Medicine

- 3-4 advanced dermal needling sessions per year to stimulate collagen, refine texture and elevate results over time. Our dermal needling approach utilises medical protocols, with prescription numbing and additives, to make your treatment as comfortable and effective as possible.
- VIP perks: including priority booking, 10 % off retail, and exclusive pricing on other treatments (see our website for more details at www.restorecosmed.co.nz/skingym).

This beautiful patient of mine kindly agreed to be a model for a group of cosmetic doctors I was training in dermal filler.

I love teaching and think that training with anatomical precision in mind is what makes great injectors.

Look at the beautiful result we got to 😍

Melasma can be stubborn — but the right approach makes all the difference. ✨

Here are the 3 key things you need to know for preventing and managing melasma:

1️⃣ SPF is non-negotiable. Choose SPF 50, ideally with iron oxide to block UV and visible light. Use enough (2 finger lengths) and reapply.

2️⃣ Block tyrosinase activity. This is the enzyme that drives pigment production. Not all inhibitors are created equal — N-Butyl Resorcinol is one of the most potent in humans, which is why it’s the hero ingredient in our Restore Skin Anti-Pigment Cream.

3️⃣ Know your triggers. Heat, hormones, and even lasers can make melasma worse if you don’t have the basics covered.

💡 Step one is prevention: stopping new pigment from forming. Stay tuned for our next post on how to treat the pigmentation you already have.

Before and after 6 sessions of Dermal Needling.

Treating PIH from burns from a procedure at another clinic in a high risk skin type.

These images beautifully show how medical dermal needling treats multiple skin concerns in one go.
- look at these images from a pigmentation point of view
- then go back and look from a skin texture point of view
- then again with a pore size and acne point of view
- and finally again with a skin tone point of view.

Even better, we know that microscopically, the result is structurally healthier and younger skin, not just smoke and mirrors. Real regenerative change.

We take laser safety seriously. So should you!

We can do amazing things with laser technology. There's also some pretty serious risk of harm if appropriate safety precautions are not followed.
Safety should be the top priority always 👌
