🐾 Community Notice – Loving Home Needed for a Cat 🐾

We are reaching out to our community to see if anyone would like to adopt a friendly cat who has been living within premises of Kimihia Home.

Our residents who lovingly cared for the cat are no longer able to do so, and for health and safety reasons, it is not suitable for us to keep the cat in the facility.

We would love to find a safe, caring, and permanent home for this much‑loved pet.

If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact our reception on:
📞 07 828 9396

Thank you for helping us find a loving home for this special cat.

Today we loaded up two vans and set off for a much-anticipated outing to Kaiaua for fish and chips. The excitement was instant — lots of chatter, laughter, and happy anticipation as we headed off on our adventure.
Once we arrived, we sat together enjoying hot, crispy fish and chips straight from the fryer. The simple pleasure of getting out, sharing a meal, and soaking up a change of scenery brought so many smiles and wonderful conversation.
After a relaxing drive around the township, we made a sweet stop in Rangiriri for delicious ice creams — the perfect way to finish our day.
Outings like this nurture connection, independence, and wellbeing. Full hearts, full bellies, and very happy residents all round.

🍦 Sweet Treats & Special Memories 🍦
Today we had a special visit from Alan from Scoop’s Ice Cream, who travels all the way from Pirongia and has been coming to see us for over seven years. We’re so lucky!
Residents were able to walk up, choose their favourite flavour, and order their own ice cream — and those single scoops were HUGE!
For some, it was the first time in years ordering from an ice cream truck. You could see the memories of childhood summers come rushing back.
Moments like this are more than just a treat — they support independence, confidence, and the joy of making your own choices. A beautiful afternoon filled with smiles and sweet memories.

Today we were incredibly honoured to welcome Leon Wharekura — our very own homegrown talent from Huntly — along with the talented Gina Paul, to Kimihia Home for a truly special afternoon.
Leon’s amazing talent and wide range of songs had everyone singing along, tapping their feet, and even getting up for a little dance. The room was filled with music, laughter, and pure joy.
His presence and entertainment touched our residents deeply — bringing big smiles and even a few happy tears. It was a beautiful afternoon of connection, movement, and shared memories through music. We feel so grateful to have experienced such a heartwarming time together. 🎶💛

🍦🍦 A yummy treat for our Kauri Residents. We went and tried our new local ice cream shop The Scoops Nice Mart. Our Residents said they are Big and very yummy and can't wait to go back again🍦🍦

Smiles all round 😊

Valentine’s Day at Kimihia was about more than decorating cupcakes — it was about creating meaningful moments. Watching our residents carefully ice, sprinkle, and then personally hand their cupcakes out to others was truly special. Simple acts of giving like this nurture kindness, connection, and a sense of purpose. When residents are able to create something with their own hands and share it with others, it builds confidence, encourages social interaction, and strengthens our community spirit. These small, thoughtful Valentine’s Day moments remind us that everyone has something valuable to give — and that kindness, no matter how simple, makes a big difference. 💛

Today at Kimihia our hearts were well and truly full 💕
We had the sweetest visit from our little friends at Bizzyy Bodz Daycare in Huntly, who came to spend the morning with our residents creating beautiful Valentine’s art together. From the moment they walked through the doors, the energy lifted — tiny hands, big smiles, and lots of chatter filled our home.
The children took a little tour around Kimihia, stopping to meet many of our residents. Watching those intergenerational connections unfold was incredibly special. You could see the joy on our residents’ faces — eyes lighting up, smiles flowing, For some, it brought back precious memories of their own children and grandchildren.
As a Diversional Therapist, days like this are so empowering. The simple act of creating art side by side, sharing conversation, and exchanging smiles supports emotional wellbeing, purpose, and connection. It reminds our residents that they are valued, seen, and important.
We finished the visit with our residents gifting the children a few little treats — a small gesture that meant so much. The pride in being able to give back was beautiful to witness.
These visits truly make our residents’ day, and we already look forward to the next one.

At Kimihia, once a month we take a group of our kaimātua to the local supermarket, giving them the chance to choose the groceries and treats they enjoy. This simple activity is about much more than shopping — it fosters independence, autonomy, and confidence, allowing our residents to make their own choices and maintain skills they’ve used throughout their lives.
Picking out fresh fruit, snacks, and other goodies encourages decision-making, planning, and even budgeting, all while providing social connection and a sense of purpose. Activities like this support self-directed living, helping our kaimātua stay active, engaged, and connected to everyday life.
It’s moments like these — small, meaningful, and empowering — that make a real difference in

Our residents were actively engaged in harvesting riwai grown over the summer, followed by replanting lettuce and seasonal vegetables to enjoy as summer draws to a close. Gardening provides meaningful opportunities for learning, connection to the whenua, and maintaining physical activity.
What began as a plan to make fry bread to enjoy with our homemade Black Doris plum jam soon evolved into a kai tahi, with residents choosing to come together for a shared barbecue. This spontaneous shift highlighted resident-led decision making, teamwork, and independence.
Residents proudly used the freshly harvested riwai in a potato salad, alongside garden lettuce, fried eggs, and fry bread — all prepared and enjoyed together. These shared activities support self-directive learning, allowing residents to continue doing the things they love from home. In particular, our men enjoyed taking the lead with the barbecue, sharing skills and stories along the way.
Activities like this reinforce independence, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose, while honouring the lived experiences of our kaumātua.
