Today at our Hospice South Day Programme, we took a beautiful journey to Japan

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful cook Hidemi, who generously shared her culture and stories while creating a delicious Japanese-inspired menu for everyone to enjoy - including a stunning sushi cake and fresh salad. It was such a special way to connect through food, learning, and shared experience.

We were also delighted to welcome Karen for her very first Day Programme as our new Coordinator - and what a warm and vibrant introduction it was! Alongside this, it was fantastic to have one of our new volunteers from the Murihiku Young Parents Learning Centre join us, bringing fresh energy into the room!

At Hospice South, our Day Programme is all about creating moments that matter and today was filled with connection, culture, and joy

Duck season arrived early at Hospice South’s Day Programme!

Our wonderful Registered Social Worker, Jess Brown, went all out curating a duck shooting-themed day that had everyone embracing a true slice of Southland life. From camo gear and face paint to water pistols and even a very well-behaved duck dog, the room was full of laughter, storytelling, and plenty of fun.

A huge thank you to Phill Robb - Southland duck-calling extraordinaire - who joined us to teach the art of duck calling, sharing his skills before hosting a duck-calling competition that uncovered some impressive talent!

And of course, no authentic southern gathering would be complete without the menu - cheese rolls, cheerios with tomato sauce, and bacon & egg pie (with absolutely no peas!)

At Hospice South, our Day Programme is about creating meaningful moments and memories filled with joy.
A HUGE thank you to everyone involved in bringing this unforgettable day to life.

A small change in name, with a meaningful impact.

You may start noticing Hospice Southland gradually evolving to Hospice South - a subtle change that better reflects the wider community we support across Southland, Queenstown and the Whakatipu region.

While the name is evolving, what matters most remains exactly the same - our values, our people, and our commitment to providing compassionate palliative care to those who need us.
This isn’t a major rebrand. It’s a thoughtful step that recognises the reality of the care we already provide across the wider southern region, while remaining proudly grounded in Southland.

As a community-funded organisation, we’re also taking a practical approach - updating materials over time as they naturally need refreshing, ensuring every dollar continues to go where it matters most.

Thank you to our communities across the south for continuing to walk alongside us.

Today at our Hospice Southland Day Programme, we celebrated Easter with warmth, connection, and reflection.

Alongside celebrating the joy and togetherness that Easter brings, our Hospice Southland Day Programme also took time to honour two very special members of our Day Programme family who have recently passed.

Both Paula and Julian were true characters who lit up the room every time they walked through the door and reminded us all what it means to live every moment fully. They were part of the heart of our Day Programme - living life on their own terms, embracing every moment, and taking every opportunity they could.

Today was a gentle reminder that Easter is not only about celebration, but also about remembrance, love, and the connections we share with one another.

Here’s to Paula and Julian - thank you for the laughter, the stories, and the light you brought into our Hospice family.

🌿 A Conversation Our Community Is Ready For 🌿

You may have seen the recent news article highlighting the upcoming visit from internationally recognised author and storyteller Kevin Toolis — and we’re excited to be bringing this important conversation to our community.

Kevin speaks about something we often avoid…
death, dying, and how we care for one another at the end of life.

But this isn’t heavy or clinical.
It’s human, honest, and deeply meaningful.

✨ Join us to:
• Reflect on how we talk about death and dying
• Understand why the last days of life matter so much to families
• Explore how we can better support each other

Whether you’re a health professional, volunteer, carer, or simply curious — this conversation is for everyone.

Yesterdays Day Programme was filled with creativity, connection, and a touch of green as we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in true Hospice Southland style. Between a few fun antics and plenty of laughter, we were lucky to welcome CanBead Southland in to host a beautiful hands-on workshop.

Attendees spent the morning crafting beaded bookmarks and bracelets .There’s something special about creating together, sharing stories, and enjoying those small, meaningful moments side by side.

Thank you to CanBead for bringing the creativity, and to everyone who made the day so special!
