A Special Springtime Invitation

Paterson Park and Gardens is 6 acres of beautiful gardens nestled just above Waikaka. Every spring, their daffodils burst into bloom – including a stunning avenue of conifers lined with golden daffodils at their base.

For one day only, Paterson Park and Gardens will be opening their gardens for you to wander and enjoy the daffodils in full bloom. If it works well, they would love to make this a special annual event!

Over the past two weeks, our Day Programme has been filled with some very special moments

Last week we were treated to a moving performance by a group of St Mary’s Kapa Haka students and their teachers, who stopped by Hospice Southland on their way to Polyfest. Their Waiata and Haka lifted spirits and brought such joy to everyone in the room – what a gift to experience.

And today, thanks to the generosity of a member of the Southland Vintage Car Club, some of our Day Programme attendees had the chance to enjoy a ride in a stunning vintage car. The smiles and stories that followed were priceless!

Ngā mihi nui to our wonderful community for sharing your time and talents with Hospice Southland – you make these moments truly unforgettable.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Living Legacy Biographies!

A team of our amazing Living Legacy patient biography volunteers recently had a special tour of Craigs Design & Print, where the biographies they help create come to life.

A heartfelt thank you to Ellie, one of our volunteer team members who worked at Craigs for 40 years, and Brent Hollingworth, Craigs Production Manager, for showing us how printing has evolved -from the old ways to today’s modern techniques - and for sharing their knowledge about how they print and produce our most important Living Leagacy patient biographies.

It was inspiring to see our community working together to create lasting legacies for our patients. A huge thank you to Craigs for hosting us—we hope you enjoyed your morning tea!

This past weekend marked a very special milestone – the 10th Anniversary of the Southern Indoor Charity Dog Trials

Not only was it a fantastic celebration of the incredible skill and teamwork between dogs and handlers, but it was also a wonderful reminder of the community spirit that surrounds this event.

We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to the organisers, competitors, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who made this anniversary so memorable – and especially for the ongoing fundraising you do in support of Hospice Southland.

A special shout-out to our wonderful Community Nurse Raewyn, who took charge of the catering, and to all of our Hospice staff who helped organise, cook and connect with the community across the weekend – we are so grateful for your mahi.

Your generosity and support help us continue to provide comfort, care, and compassion to families right here in our own community.

Dying Matters Week 2025 Aotearoa connects people across Aotearoa to start conversations in a safe space, learn from local experts and seek support to get affairs in order and navigate grief or loss.

Join us from Monday 1st to Sunday 7th September - In either Queenstown or Invercargill.

Programmes for both areas include hands-on workshops and presentations from experts in end-of-life, grief and death-care, resources and information from local businesses, curated collections of books on grief and dying, online events and podcasts, art and theatre, poetry and storytelling, Death Cafes and panel discussions.

The 2025 Cheese Roll Champion Has Been Crowned!

Today was the day – the sizzle, the smell, the suspense… and after a fierce (and slightly cheesy) battle, the wonderful Anne Potter has claimed the coveted trophy in our annual Hospice Southland staff Cheese Roll Competition!

For those not in the know, this is serious business around here. Once a year, our staff go head-to-head in the ultimate culinary showdown: creating the perfect Southland cheese roll. Each competitor brings their own secret techniques, wild flavour twists, and (sometimes questionable) competitive tactics. They’re judged on taste, texture, presentation – and of course, the all-important “cheese stretch” factor.

The competition was hot, the sabotage was minimal (…we think ), and the creativity was off the charts. From secret family recipes to daring experiments, every roll was a winner in its own way – but Anne’s creation took the title for 2025!

A huge thank you to all our entrants and taste testers for making this one of the tastiest days of the year!

Celebrating Our Volunteers – Roadshow Highlights

Yesterday, we hosted one of our Volunteer " Getting to know your hospice" Roadshows onsite, welcoming a fantastic cross-section of 17 volunteers from across our services – including a group who travelled all the way from Gore!

It was an inspiring afternoon filled with connection, celebration, and insight. Huge thanks to everyone who made it possible:
- Our wonderful speakers – Rohan, Sharon, Sarah Jean, and Jen – who spoke beautifully about their roles and the incredible impact our volunteers have.
- Helen McCurdy, our Board Chair, for sharing a few heartfelt words.
- Hidemi for her delicious catering that went down a treat.
- The staff who took time to pop in, show our volunteers around, and make them feel so welcome.

The afternoon truly reflected what Hospice Southland is all about – teamwork, warmth, genuine connection, and shared purpose.
We left feeling inspired and deeply connected to our mission, and we hope our volunteers did too.
.....A special mention goes to our mystery guests from Hospice Shop - Gore who took the scenic route – accidentally heading halfway to Bluff after missing the turn-off – but still made it in time to enjoy the afternoon!

Fragrance-free products are gentle and suitable for everyone, making them perfect for use in our care.
