Whanau, I'm a huge supporter of information and education for haputanga; the korero we have each appointment, 'antenatal' classes and the online breastfeeding antenatal sessions all work together to make you more informed and confident in your birth choices.
For anyone interested in Te Whare Tangata, please see details on the original post. So many mama/whanau get nervous about group settings, but I promise you the warmest welcome there.
If you've attended one of their earlier intakes, I'd love for you to share some of your highlights from it.
Te Whare Tangata | Honouring Traditional Māori Birthing Practices
We’re pleased to bring the second intake of Te Whare Tangata for term 2, offering whānau a supportive space grounded in reconnection, strength, and aroha.
This 6‑week kaupapa goes beyond standard antenatal learning. It centres traditional Māori birthing knowledge and practices passed down by our tīpuna, delivered in a holistic way so whānau feel informed, supported, and uplifted throughout their hapū and birth journey.
Whānau who join Te Whare Tangata are welcomed into a space of aroha and shared learning, beginning with whakawhānaungatanga, whakapapa, and understanding their rights and their pēpi’s birthrights. Across the kaupapa, whānau learn about hauora and tikanga through hapūtanga, the signs and stages of labour, and birth options including both natural and medical interventions, with opportunities to engage in hands‑on practices such as creating muka ties for their pēpi’s pito. Each session is held with Te Haa, meaningful kōrero, and nourishing kai, creating a supportive environment that uplifts māmā and their support people throughout the journey.
Hapū māmā who are interested in registering for this kaupapa or would like to find out more are welcome to contact us on 0800 AWARUA (292782) or email admin@awarua.nz.
