Swab Ready & Study Strong! 🧪💪

On May 1st, the MOKO Foundation team got hands-on with expert swab training thanks to our amazing friend and local nurse, Giddy, from Te Whare Oranga O Muriwhenua. Her skills, knowledge, and iMoko experience gave us the confidence to swab like pros! 👩‍⚕️✨

We were also privileged to be joined by Lead Scientist Una Ren from ESR, who’ll be testing the samples from our Te Hiku whānau. Ngā mihi to both Giddy and Una for empowering our team with the tools and confidence to kick off the next phase of our Carriage Study.

We’re trained, ready, and excited — now we need YOU!

Kia ora koutou!

We've been mentioning the Pneumococcal and Meningococcal Carriage Study quite a lot. And most people know what a study is.

But what is 'carriage'? And why does knowing more about carriage matter?

Well...

Infectious disease carriage is when people have the bugs in their body, can oftentimes not have symptoms, but they can spread it around to their whānau and hapori members without knowing. Sometimes these whānau or hapori members are more vulnerable and can get sick. Māori tāngata are one of the groups in Aotearoa that are more likely to be hospitalized for these illnesses.

Why does knowing more about carriage matter?

Knowing more about who is a 'carrier', whether they're getting sick, and who they're spreading it to (and how) can help decision makers make better strategic decisions to help keep more people safe from these infectious diseases.

We're focused on ensuring the study is successful for this reason. To keep more whānau safe from these infectious diseases.

Are you living in Te Hiku and are you interested in joining our study? Have any pātai? Whakapā mai - get in touch via email: elizabeth@themokofoundation.com or DM us. We'd love to hear from you!

*Kaupapa Māori biomedical research has many layers*

At its core, it’s shaped by the values and needs of the Te Hiku community we’re working alongside. But it also takes skill and knowledge to do this work well. Without both of those things in balance, we won’t get the kind of research outcomes our people deserve.

This week, we headed to Te Whanganui-a-Tara to help make that happen.

We have a responsibility to our Te Hiku whānau to:

- Be open about what we’re doing and why
- Make sure they know where their swabs and information are going
- Have strong systems in place to keep their data and samples safe
- Communicate all of this clearly and honestly

We went down with the goal of better understanding what happens to the swabs once they leave our hands—where they go, who’s working with them, and how they’ll be treated. We want to be confident they’ll be looked after properly—with skill, care, and respect.

After meeting with ESR, we feel reassured. The Carriage Study we’re about to begin has the mana of our Te Hiku o Te Ika whānau at its centre. We’re proud to be part of something that not only holds true to our values but also contributes to both academic and community knowledge.

Have any questions about our rangahau or mahi? We're keen to kōrero. Drop any pātai below 🙂

Our carriage research at TMF is skillfully combining local mātauranga and research skills with an Aotearoa-wide team of specialists and scientists - all with a shared goal: protecting our communities from infectious diseases.

Natalie Netzler is part of our research team who is contributing her valuable science and virology knowledge to our carriage study.

Knowledge is power, and Natalie generously shared some of her knowledge with our community to help us be informed and educated.

See more about Natalie and watch the recording of her kōrero here, e hoa mā!

Keep your eyes peeled e hoa mā 👀

We'll be sharing more about our study, what it means for our Māori community, and how we're contributing to an exciting kaupapa Māori biomedical research space in the coming months.

But first, a reminder about what we're gearing up to do next month and what's involved for our Te Hiku tāngata...

🤒 We're looking at how Pneumococcal and Meningococcal is spread in our Te Hiku community
👥 We need 700 Māori tāngata who live in Te Hiku o Te Ika to participate
🏠We want to include everyone in your household to understand how it's being spread amongst whānau members
👩‍⚕️Involvement includes a nose and throat swab. You'll also answer survey questions
🚗We can do home visits or you can come to us - whatever's easiest for you
🎁 A koha of $50 per whānau member participant will be provided to acknowledge your time and help with the study

Want in or want to know more? Get in contact with us - we'd love to hear from you and register your interest.

Waharoa Ki Te Toi sits under The Moko Foundation with the aim to facilitate and support biomedical research within the Te Hiku Te Ika rohe.

Our current project is a Pnuemococcal and Meningococcal Carriage study with the aim to explore why our whānau are one of the groups most effected by these contagious illnesses.

We'll share more about our study, what we're doing and why over the coming months.

But first, we'd like to introduce you to our small but passionate team.
