It's a big Village "welcome" to Kate Donley, who has been appointed to our board to represent shareholder Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN).

Kate brings significant health, social and aged care expertise to the position, along with extensive governance experience.

She also serves on the Boards of Mercy Hospice, PSN and Auckland’s St Columba Presbyterian Church, and previously with elder support system provider Virtual Village and ADHD New Zealand.

Previously she served on the Board of aged residential care provider HBH Senior Living, an aged-care Charitable Company with multiple sites and service offerings, including social housing,

She provides a range of business development, general management and governance services through her firm, Kate Donley Consulting. Before this she led Auckland-based Crawford Medical Centre through the pandemic, re-shaping operations and growing the profitability of this GP clinic, aged and specialist care provider.

Kate moved from corporate roles into the community sector after a close friend died from cancer.

“From that point I needed my work to be for social good,” she said. “I’m therefore delighted to have joined Kerikeri Retirement Village and to be able to contribute to this charitable company. It’s important to me that we continue to provide affordable people-centred and community-led retirement living and care options, as an alternative to the bigger for-profit players with deep pockets.”

Kate's appointment is a good excuse for us to explain our community-focused ownership structure. She has joined the Board of Kerikeri Retirement Village Limited, which is a Charitable Company. It is owned jointly and equally by the Kerikeri Village Community Trust and PSN, a charitable social services provider. The board of directors comprises a mix of shareholder representatives and independent directors. ^PH

Karakia, waiata, laughter and camaraderie marked the blessing today at the site of our new community centre. The new facility will be built adjacent to the administration block and will feature a café, bar and outdoor seating area.

It replaces the existing social centre. The Village plans to use that space ultimately for an upgraded and expanded care facility.

Construction of the 1,000 square metre community centre will start immediately and is due for completion in the second half of next year.

Our existing social centre has pretty-much done its dash and it was certainly time to build something that better meets the needs of our residents.

Our aim is to have a communal facility that can cater to the demands of our residents as the Village grows.

We hope the community centre will become an asset for the wider Kerikeri area as a potential venue for events, functions and activities. That it will become a focal point for the wider Kerikeri community, not just for our residents.

It’s our way of involving our town in the life of our Village which is, after all, a community project. It was built by the community for our community, and it’s managed by our community. So it makes sense to have a place where our residents and our town can mix and mingle.

The construction project was put out to general tender, with selection based on a professional process used in the construction industry under the leadership of the project manager, a Kerikeri resident who project managed the construction of our apartment building.

The contract was awarded to the Whangārei office of Brendan Murray Construction, a national specialist in retirement village and care facility construction projects. The firm has ensured that 90 percent of the sub-contractors involved in the project are either Kerikeri or Northland-based.

BMC took great care in its response to our tender to address the fact that they would be building right in the heart of a fully operational retirement village, and within a stone’s throw of our care facility and hospital wing. This demonstrated the type of empathy, consideration and professionalism that we would look for from contractors working in sensitive parts of our Village. ^PH

We are very grateful to Far North District Council for organising Tree Safe to come and clear up the fallen Redwood tree on Good Friday. A huge effort on a public holiday.
The photo shows the tree was rotten and had a very shallow, small root ball.
We have now been invited to the FNDC meeting on Wednesday to discuss the trees under urgency with the Council and we are very pleased to do this.
Our message will be that these trees represent very real hazard and risk. Not only to our residents, staff and visitors, but also to anyone in the wider community who might be in the path of the next one to go.
Thank you to Councillor Steve McNally, Deputy Mayor Kelly Stratford and Kahika Moko Tepania for treating this with the urgency it needs.

Dear Far North District Council and Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board

There are times when “we told you so” is the only appropriate message.

This Redwood tree on your neighbouring reserve - among those which you have repeatedly assured us pose no risk to the health, safety and wellbeing of our residents, staff and families - collapsed today and crushed our gardening shed. Fortunately, the young staff member who was inside the shed at the time heard the crack of the falling tree and ran outside – just in time to avoid being crushed.

This time it was our gardener and our gardening shed. Next time it could just as easily be our care facility or one of our cottages. A number of years ago a large branch fell directly into a room in our Robinson hospital wing. Fortunately this room was vacant at the time. Another village resident has had a branch fall on her parked car. Again, fortunately, without injury.

So that’s now three cases of “fortunately”. When will our luck, and yours, run out?

The wind is starting to die down and has shifted direction away from our Village. We believe the immediate danger has now passed. But now, please - for the love of all that is holy – take our warnings and concerns seriously, remove your hazardous trees and replace them with a mix of native and citrus trees. We believe that native trees would be a far more appropriate option than exotics, especially now there is no longer an orchard to protect from wind, while the citrus trees would provide a ‘pick your own’ option for passers-by using the Reserve.

We have been warning and pleading with you about these trees for at least a decade. In October 2022 we wrote to you about the matter and said:

“This letter serves to place on record, once again, our Board’s deep concern at Council’s reluctance to take the steps we believe are necessary to protect our residents from injury or worse should one or more of these towering, exotic trees shed a branch or collapse in its entirety.

"We maintain that any liability arising from such an event lies squarely with Council and that Council carries this risk.”

Now, finally, we have proof of what we feared to be the case. Will you pay attention? ^PH

Yesterday, Lynne reached 25 years of dedicated service to our village. Over the past two and a half decades, she has become a deeply valued and much-loved member of our team, known for her kindness, reliability, and the genuine care she shows to everyone around her. Lynne's commitment, warmth, and quiet good humour have left a lasting impression on staff and residents alike. Thank you, Lynne, we are incredibly grateful for all you have contributed—and even more grateful that you’re not going anywhere just yet!

The photo's below - Lynne's first day at the village and the second one taken last year as she celebrated a milestone birthday.
