Due to rising river levels and the expert advice from the Environment Canterbury flood controller, Mayor Sam Broughton has declared state of emergency for the Selwyn District at 5.39am.
Our rivers continue to rise and we are experiencing significant surface flooding including roads. Residents are being asked to self-evacuate from the Upper Selwyn Huts due to concerns of flooding from the Selwyn River. This is a precautionary measure due to potential risk to the residents and their properties.
The Council have distributed 250 sandbags to specific houses in the areas of West Melton, Doyleston and Leeston. Community Sandbag stations were set up at community centres in Sheffield and Glentunnel on Wednesday evening.
Coes Ford and other fords across the district have closed. A number of roads are also closed across the district due to surface flooding and we have these road closures on the Council website.
Persistent rain continues to fall across the district and we ask people to take care when driving to work and school.
Conserve water notice remains in place for the Acheron, Arthur's Pass, Dalethorpe, and Hororata Water Supplies. We are encouraging Selwyn residents to conserve water until the supply can be restored.
Heavy rain warning in place until 6pm Thursday 1 May. Keep an eye on MetService for weather updates.
Check out the Selwyn District Council page and website for all updates on this weather event.
