Coping With Grief Over the Holiday Season
Whether the loss of a loved one is recent or further in the past,
Christmas is often a time when we feel their absence more.
Here are some strategies for coping with grief over the holidays:
• Acknowledge your grief: Allow yourself to feel sadness, anger, and joy. It's important to expand the conversation
around grief during the holidays, when many people experience feelings of loss and sorrow.
• Create new traditions: Making new memories can be healing.
• Ask for help: Grief is a normal part of life, and it's okay to ask for help if you need it.
• Honour your loved one: You can share memories, light a candle, or create a memory box. You can also implement these traditions going forward.
• Set realistic expectations: Try not to cancel the holiday, but instead set realistic expectations for yourself.
• Draw comfort from being around others: You can find solace in being with supportive family and friends at this time of year.
• Be patient with yourself: Remember that grieving can be hard work, but the years ahead don't need to be a time of constant sadness.
Most of all
Take care of yourself
Make sure you get enough rest and engage in activities
that bring you comfort.
If you know someone that has a hard time over Christmas or the holiday season
due to loss, check in and make sure they are ok and follow their lead.
If you need to talk with someone, please contact us,
as we can help with referrals and have literature available.

Latest Update for Level 2 from the government
September 2021
Funerals and tangihanga at Alert Level 2
At Alert Level 2, there are limits on the number of people who can attend a funeral, tangihanga, kawe/hari mate or unveiling ceremony/hura kōhatu.
Up to 100 people can attend a funeral or tangihanga if it is held indoors.

This applies to funerals and tangihanga held at:
• funeral homes
• churches, mosques and other faith-based institutions
• hired venues or facilities
• private dwellings.
Organisers legally must record attendees to make sure contact tracing can happen if needed. If you are visiting a funeral home, or attending a funeral or tangihanga, you can scan in using the NZ COVID Tracer app, or provide your details for contact tracing.
Do not attend a funeral, tangihanga or religious gathering if you are feeling unwell. Stay home and call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 for advice on getting a test.

We recommend avoiding physical contact such as harirū, hongi, kissing and hugging except if you:
• live with them
• are whānau
• are close friends.
Providing last rites
At Alert Level 2, priests, imam and religious celebrants can provide last rites in a hospital, hospice or private residence. If the person they are visiting who is dying is in a health facility, they legally must follow the:
• visiting rules of the health facility and,
• all relevant infection prevention and control procedures.
