πŸ“š Monthly Tutorial πŸ“š

Each month our team come together for a connection breakfast at our Kapiti Clinic and we provide a tutorial topic to go towards our physios professional development.

Yesterday our Clinic Manager TJ led a presentation on phases 0, 1 and 2 of the Melbourne Protocol for ACL rehabilitation. A protocol written by physiotherapy specialists Mick Hughes and Randall Cooper.

These phases detail progression from acute injury or surgery through to full gym strengthening in preparation for return to running/plyometric activity.

🌟 Ready to get back into exercising? Here are some tips to help you ease into it safely!

1️⃣ Start slow: Gradually increase intensity and duration to avoid overdoing it.
2️⃣ Listen to your body: If something doesn’t feel right, adjust your routine or take a break.
3️⃣ Incorporate warm-ups and cool-downs: Preparing your muscles and helping them recover is key!

Remember, consistency is more important than intensity at first! πŸ’ͺ✨

Thank you to our physiotherapist Jack for a great tutorial today regarding running training modes, common running injury sites and strategies for injury prevention in distance running!

Jack studied in the deep south at the University of Otago and spent time with us on a six week placement during his final year of study in mid-2024. We could see his potential and enjoyed having him around so much that we offered him his first physiotherapy job upon his graduation and he started with us in January this year.

Jack is a keen recreational runner, and is developing a vast knowledge base on running injuries and training methods that was on full display today, keeping even our most experienced clinicians on their toes!

Keep up the great work Jack!

MOST COMMON NETBALL INJURIES

In practice the most common injury is to the ankle joint. These injuries can range in severity from ligament or tendon sprain to fracture, and typically involves the lateral (outer) aspect of the ankle joint. Most are lower grade, and will settle down quickly, but some can be niggly and feel unstable for longer periods. This can significantly impact your enjoyment levels and participation. Taping the ankle can be beneficial in keeping you on the court.

Knee injuries are also common. Like the ankle, we mostly see sprain injuries of the medial (inner) collateral ligament. More significant injuries may present with symptoms of clicking, locking, blocking, collapsing or giving way, indicating possible injury to the meniscus and/or ACL. These injuries require more intensive management and possible specialist referral.

The last common injuries are to the achilles or calf, due to the stop/start nature and frequent jumping activity. Again the majority of these injuries are low grade, but significant injuries like an achilles rupture are easy to identify courtside.

The ACC Netball Smart Warmup is an excellent starting point for pre game preparation, but remember that injuries also happen at training so its important that you get some guidance around appropriate self rehab.

The KCP Physio team has been looking after the Kapiti Netball site for many years so has a lot of netball injury experience.

MOST COMMON INJURIES

This depends on the sport, and most sports are played in specific seasons. In the colder seasons its often wet, cold and slippery which not only increases the chance of leg injuries but also when you fall you can injury other parts of your body such as your shoulder, wrist and even your head.

Other factors with sport can be age. With younger people its more likely they will injure tendons, muscles and ligaments whereas the older you get its more likely to be achy stiff joints. Obviously has an influence on what sports people choose to do.

Other factors to consider are whether there is contact during the sport or whether the injury is the result of a traumatic event or related to overuse.

All of these factors signal that there is no single most common injury. The team at KCP Physio is equipped to assist you with all your injury needs.
