Post COVID-19 Team Dynamics - How's your team bearing up?

The COVID-19 Journey has been a tough time for lots of different reasons. Some of you/your team may have dealt with this better than others. Some will have high resilience and everything may appear like water off a duck's back. Others may have concerns to manage for themselves. Some may be anxious. Some may be taking the mickey and pretending they are worried as a thinly veiled cover for laziness.

We have had chats with clients indicating all of these are very common. Re-entry anxiety is a real thing for some and describes how people feel when "re-entering" their old lives. Similar reactions can occur for any change that one views as significant, for them. Manage people carefully so they don't get overwhelmed.

Our chart is a light-hearted comparison with the Technology Adoption bell curve. Anxiety though, is real. Our chats with business owners are finding they have a mix in their team -
• those who's main focus is do whatever it takes, to help get back to normal
• those who are pretty relaxed about the post COVID-19 workplace and want social interaction again
• those who are genuinely anxious, but have returned to work uncomfortably
• those who want to stay home, collect their $585 p/wk and not go past the front door, basically wanting something for nothing

How do we manage varying attitudes in the workplace?

Be kind, within limits. Have a plan and communicate this to your team within appropriate timeframes, as things change, they will.
• Put safeguards in place - it's your job to ensure your employees feel safe.
• Remain flexible - Remember that not everyone will feel comfortable - offer options to aid self management.
• Combat misinformation - there's a lot of unfiltered, not always fact-based information on social feeds. Have clear instructions and reliable information available for your workplace.
• Encourage self-care - show empathy for your team and appreciation for their work whilst still expecting them to meet the basics of needed performance and standards of acceptable behaviours.

The bottom line is that you're in this together. If though, you have team members who aren't helping you to row the boat in the same direction, then it's especially vital in this economy to take quick action. Make a plan and talk to an HR expert on how to manage this situation promptly and effectively. Any team members who are taking the mickey need to find their futures freed up for other things. Hire or fire based on attitude. Skills can be taught. Your business may have no choice but to adjust numbers if things don't recover, or worsen.
