Celebrating International Midwives’ Day 💙

Today we recognise the incredible difference our midwives make for wāhine, pēpi and whānau every day. From pregnancy through birth and beyond, they walk alongside families at some of life’s most important moments.

This year’s theme, ‘One Million More Midwives’, is a global call to grow and support the midwifery workforce – so more families can access safe, high-quality care when they need it most.

To all our amazing midwives: thank you for your skill, compassion and dedication. We appreciate everything you do! 👶✨

Meet our new Violence Reduction Specialists – Olly Va’alepu and Alana Jones 👋

After close to a decade as nurses at Wellington Hospital, Olly and Alana are now supporting our frontline teams across Capital, Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa to stay safe at work.

They train staff in practical skills like verbal de-escalation, situational awareness and safe breakaway techniques – helping them feel confident and prepared if situations become challenging.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at work and most people who use our services treat staff with respect – we really value that. For the rare times things escalate, it’s important our teams have the right tools and support.

Because looking after our people helps them look after you. ❤

Wellington Regional Hospital weather update in case you have appointments there. 👇

Wellington Regional Hospital remains fully operational across all sites.

While there has been minor to moderate storm damage to some buildings, essential services and patient care are continuing as usual.

🚗 Patients are encouraged to check travel conditions before leaving home and make decisions based on their own circumstances.

📱If you are unable to attend your appointment due to weather or transport disruptions, please let us know as soon as possible by calling the number on your appointment letter.

We continue to work closely with our partners as further poor weather is forecast. We'll provide health related updates if we receive any. Check the first comment for links to use if you don't need to go to hospital but have a health issue or can't travel to your usual health provider.

Please take care when travelling, e te whānau. 💙

Please also follow South Wairarapa District Council Wellington Region Emergency Management Office and MetService New Zealand for ongoing updates.

Life begins with hā (breath), but Whooping Cough can threaten that precious life force.

Whooping cough spreads easily and can cause bad coughing making it very hard for pēpi/babies to breathe. Especially newborn pēpi who haven’t had their 6-week immunisations.

If you’re hapū/pregnant, a free whooping cough vaccine from 13 weeks can protect your pēpi by passing on immunity until they’re old enough for their own immunisations at 6 weeks old. Boosters at 4 and 11 years help keep protection strong.

Protect your taonga. 💙

Book an immunisation today with your usual doctor, Hauora Māori or Pacific health provider, pharmacy, or online at bookmyvaccine.nz

Winter is approaching. Protect yourself and your family.

Flu vaccines are available starting today, 1 April, to safeguard you and your community this winter.

Alongside flu, Covid, and whooping cough also spread more easily in colder months. Immunisation effectively reduces severe illness, hospitalisation, and the spread of winter viruses.

✅ Flu vaccines available now
✅ Covid vaccines year-round; ensure you’re up-to-date before winter
✅ Free vaccines for those aged 65+, anyone who is pregnant, and people with certain health conditions.

👶 Protect pēpi this winter
Whooping cough (pertussis) can be serious for babies. Pregnant women should get immunised to pass some immunity to newborns until they receive their own immunisations at 6 weeks. (Ensure baby's immunisations are timely!)

You can book vaccines at many pharmacies, GPs, Hauora Māori, and Pacific health providers, as well as some midwives and community vaccinators.

📅 Book your vaccination online at 👉 bookmyvaccine.health.nz

In addition to vaccination, prevent winter illness by staying home if unwell, washing hands frequently, and practicing good hygiene.

Construction will start on a new, purpose-built MRI facility at Wairarapa Hospital later this year - a development which will make a real difference for our community.

A new MRI scanner means Wairarapa patients will receive high quality diagnostic imaging much closer to home. For many patients, removing the need to travel will be a significant improvement in their care experience.

Having an MRI service on-site will help reduce current wait times. Faster access to imaging means earlier diagnosis, quicker specialist decision-making and earlier treatment – all of which contribute to better health outcomes.

This investment doesn’t just benefit Wairarapa. By shifting approximately 1,700 MRI scans a year back into our district, we’ll help ease pressure on MRI machines in neighbouring centres, supporting shorter wait times across the wider Central Region.

This new MRI facility, together with our new replacement CT scanner, is a significant investment in the future of health services for Wairarapa and we look forward to the benefits it will bring for patients and families across our region.
