Emerging research suggests that Alzheimer’s disease may be linked to an unexpected culprit — gum disease.

A study discovered the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacteria responsible for chronic periodontitis, in the brains of deceased Alzheimer’s patients.

Researchers found that when mice were infected with the bacteria, it colonized their brains and triggered the production of amyloid beta, a protein commonly associated with Alzheimer’s. This evidence strengthens the hypothesis that the disease could have infectious origins rather than being solely a neurodegenerative disorder.

The study also revealed that toxic enzymes from the bacteria were present in individuals who had Alzheimer's-related brain changes but had not yet been diagnosed with dementia, suggesting the infection may begin years before symptoms appear.

This discovery opens the door to new potential treatments. A pharmaceutical company, Cortexyme, developed a compound called COR388, which showed promise in reducing both bacterial infection and amyloid beta accumulation in animal trials. While human trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness, the study underscores the importance of oral hygiene in brain health. Scientists remain cautiously optimistic, emphasizing that with no new dementia treatments in over 15 years, investigating all possible causes is crucial. While more research is needed, the link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s highlights a simple yet vital message: taking care of your teeth might help protect your brain in the long run.

I am training in Hakomi Psychotherapy at present. The way our conscious and the unconscious parts of us work is amazing. We literally need to understand the language (how to talk to) of the unconscious to make lasting change in our lives. Becoming conscious of patterns of behaviour that no longer serve us well and then approaching these with curiosity and a "l wonder what if... " approach, is a very powerful way of assisting ourselves to bring in positive change.

Important mental health gauge. We don't always recognize the changes in ourselves until things are really dire. Catching things early and seeking help can make all the difference.

Low-Normal B12 Levels Linked to Slower Brain Processing

Even within the normal range, lower levels of biologically active vitamin B12 may contribute to cognitive decline in older adults.

A new study found that participants with lower active B12 had slower cognitive processing speeds and increased brain lesions, despite meeting current nutritional guidelines.

MRI scans showed more white matter damage, which is linked to dementia and stroke risk.

Researchers suggest that current B12 recommendations may not be sufficient for neurological health, as even subtle deficiencies can affect brain function.

The findings indicate that clinicians should consider B12 supplementation for older adults experiencing neurological symptoms, even if their levels are technically normal.

It’s not the seed oils themselves, it’s the way they’re made.

It’s wild how seed oils like canola, soybean, and corn oil have been marketed as “heart-healthy” when the process to make them is anything but. Here’s a little reality check:

1. It Starts with Industrial Seeds:
These oils come from crops like soybeans, corn, and rapeseed (yep, that’s canola). They aren’t pressed like olive oil or churned like butter but instead chemically extracted.

2. Chemical Solvents:
To get oil out of these tiny seeds, manufacturers use hexane, a chemical solvent. You know, the same stuff used in industrial cleaning and glue production. But sure, let’s drizzle it on our salads, right?

3. High Heat & Deodorizing:
The oils are exposed to extremely high heat, which oxidizes them, basically turning them rancid before they even hit the bottle. But you won’t smell it because they’re deodorized to mask the odor. You’re eating rancid oil, but it smells fresh, so no one notices.

4. Bleaching & Additives:
The oil is then bleached to remove any color, and additives are tossed in to extend shelf life. Because nothing says “natural” like having to bleach your food.

5. Inflammation Factory:
These oils are loaded with omega-6 fatty acids, which, in excess, throw your body’s natural balance out of whack and fuel chronic inflammation. The root cause of a lot of modern health problems.

Meanwhile, traditional fats like butter, tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil are made the old-fashioned way—with minimal processing and no chemical cocktails. If your great-grandma wouldn’t recognize it, maybe it doesn’t belong in your kitchen.

Ditch the seed oils. Your body will thank you.

A study published in Chemosphere involved healthy female participants who eliminated personal care products containing parabens and phthalates for 28 days. Analysis of breast tissue samples before and after this period revealed a significant reversal of cancer-associated phenotypes, including changes in the PI3K-AKT/mTOR pathway, autophagy, and apoptotic signaling networks.

These findings suggest that minimizing exposure to xenoestrogens - synthetic compounds that mimic estrogen - can potentially reduce breast cancer risk. Parabens and phthalates, often used as preservatives and fragrance enhancers in cosmetics and personal care products, are known xenoestrogens. By choosing products free from these chemicals, individuals may decrease the likelihood of developing cancer-related cellular changes.
