James Riley from the Wairarapa is a wedding celebrant who loves tramping, and is offering free wedding ceremonies in Tararua Forest Park.
“A ceremony in the Tararua would be great fun for me and maybe give others the chance to do something exciting and unique,” he said. “Plus, I’m always looking for an excuse to pop my boots on!”
Whether in your favourite backcountry hut or on top of a lofty mountain, Riley said he’s down for anything.
He recommends Totara Flats Hut or Mitre Flats Hut for easy access and large capacities: “Nearly anyone can get there; there’s space for tents, plenty of room inside, and both are near rivers – perfect for a summer dip.”
For adventurous couples he suggests Maungahuka Hut. “It’s a mission to get there but if you get clear weather, the views are unbeatable. There’s also a stunning tarn for great photos,” he said.
Mid Waiohine Hut, with swimming holes, grassy clearings and remoteness, would be his choice for those wanting a small and intimate wedding.
“Each spot has its own vibe. Rivers offer intimacy or fun, ridges bring drama and space and forest clearings provide serenity. Any of these could be the perfect backdrop for couples wanting something meaningful and a little different from the usual venues,” Riley said.
