A man in Brazil lost his life after climbing into a lion enclosure — and officials have confirmed the lioness will not be euthanized.

The 19-year-old had scaled a 20-foot wall and a security fence before entering the restricted area at Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park. The lioness, Leona, reacted instinctively when he came down from a tree inside her habitat.

Zoo authorities said the incident occurred only because the enclosure was deliberately breached — and emphasized that Leona showed no unusual aggression outside that moment. They clarified that euthanasia “was never considered,” and the animal is healthy and now being closely monitored after the stressful encounter.

A heartbreaking situation… but one caused by human trespassing, not an animal acting wrongly.
