Wisdom from the Hedgehog Goddess

When times are hard,
go underground
Wait it out
Reserve your strength
There is peace in the dark earth
Take your time
You will know when to re-emerge
Listen

When danger is in the air,
remember your prickles
Extend them
Sense your strength
There is power in your boundaries
Don’t apologize
You will know when it is safe again
Feel

When death approaches,
curl inward upon yourself
Determine who you are
Discover that what must die may be reborn
You exist forever
This, you will learn
Believe

When hedgerows burst with abundance,
eat your fill
Grow round and plump
There is joy in the berry’s juice
Taste it all
You are the goddess Abaset
Heart of Isis
Now, your quills shine
like rays of the rising Sun
Praise

Note: Abaset is a little-known, likely Egyptian goddess who wears a blue hedgehog on her head. Her name may translate as “Praise to Isis.”
Ancient Egyptians associated the behavior of the hedgehog with rebirth and wore amulets in the form of hedgehogs. There may have been an association with the prickly quills of the hedgehog and the sun’s rays.
The hedgehog burrows underground to wait out times of scarcity, and curls into a ball, with prickles extended in times of danger.
