A lovely article on natural ways to help with eczema.

ECZEMA~

Every day we see people come into the Dispensary seeking relief for eczema; a dry, itchy, inflamed rash of the skin that often has no easily identifiable cause. It affects 1 in 3 New Zealanders at some stage of their lives and is especially common in children.
Topical products such as creams and ointments can offer relief of dryness & itchiness, for example our naturopaths formulated our Eczema Relief Cream specifically for management of eczema. It contains herbs which may help to reduce inflammation in the skin and the likelihood of infection, as well as specific oils to help repair the skin’s barrier. We often recommend this followed by an ointment such as Manuka & Kawakawa or Calendula & H**p to seal in the moisture and create a barrier.

However, topical treatments only manage symptoms. It is vital to consider the causes & drivers of your eczema and work to address these. The below are the most common we see:

🌱Food Intolerances

🌱Gut Health

🌱Stress

🌱Allergens & Irritants

We have a new blog post on our website delving into these areas, including more in depth information about these different areas that affect skin health ✨🙏🏼🌼💧

You can also pop in store or give us a call to speak to one of our qualified Naturopaths if you'd like more support with eczema or similar skin conditions! 🤍

A twist on the classic pesto; coriander pesto.

🌿I had a big bag that needed to be used up so mixed it with olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan, lemon, a dash of Tabasco and pepper and salt. It’s been a great dip before dinner for carrots, celery and crackers.

🌿Coriander or cilantro, as it’s often called, is a great detoxifier.

🌿It supports mobilisation of toxins in the body to increase removal.

🌿it contains a compound called quercetin which had anti inflammatory and anti oxidant activity.

🌿Its cooking effect on the body is useful when it accompanies hot and spicy dishes, where it’s commonly used in Asian cooking.

🌿it’s been studied to have anti bacterial properties against Listeria, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

And apart from being used in pesto and curries, it’s a great topping for tacos and in salads😋

Test don’t guess!!
✨20% off the Oats test
But why do an OATS test?

⚡️It helps to identify chronic fatigue, sleep abnormalities, fibromyalgia, mild toxicity and auto immune conditions.

⚡️Mental health: By identifying an overgrowth of certain clostridia species can help with depression, anxiety, ADHD and autism problems.

⚡️Digestive issues and obesity: Evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria can help treat gastrointestinal disorders. It helps determine the reason for blood sugar imbalances and obesity.

⚡️The test assesses energy production and identifies vitamin and mineral deficiencies, belong optimise performance and recovery for athletes.

⚡️Skin issues: by identifying bacterial overgrowth, problems with detoxification and nutritional deficiencies it can help with acne, eczema and other skin diseases.

⚡️Disease prevention: by detecting nutrient deficiencies, anti oxidant status, metabolism problems and gut issues it can help prevent the development of chronic and severe disease.

I have to admit, it looks a bit like bird seed but my fresh batch of Bircher is yummy! 😋

🥥 I often find myself educating clients on fibre and how to get it in breakfast. Unfortunately many of the supermarket cereals are full of sugar and saturated fat so I encourage them to make their own.

🥥This one is made from all organic ingredients from in Mount Maunganui. I’ve used a combination of oats, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, coconut chips, chia seeds and dates. I soak it either the night before in cold water or if I forget that morning in warm water for an hour.

🥥Bircher is full of fibre feeding all the good little bugs in your gut.

🥥Some of these bugs make short chain fatty acids which are the main fuel for your colon cells, affect lipid, glucose, and cholesterol metabolism in the body and synthesis certain vitamins.

🥥High short chain fatty acid production, especially butyrate are synonymous with good health.

Healthy meals don’t always have to take a long time to cook or involve a whole heap of ingredients.

🍳 A simple spinach, mushroom and garlic omelette is one of my faves when I’m in a hurry, don’t have many ingredients or not feeling that hungry. It’s also a great for lunch.

🥚 The eggs provide over half your daily amount of choline which is essential for nerve cell, liver and bile function. As well as containing good quality protein.

🧄 The garlic has a strong anti microbial effect in the gut, helping keep overgrowth conditions such as candida and SIBO at bay. The spinach contains high amounts of folate and iron.

🌶 I’m a bit of a chilli fan, as you can see by the chilli sauce on the side

🌱Are you getting enough magnesium?

🌱Magnesium is the 4th most abundant mineral in the body and is used in over 600 bodily processes. It’s especially useful for the brain, muscles and liver.

🌱 75% of us are magnesium deficient. This can be due to poor food choices, lack of magnesium in the soil and STRESS! As this is a time when we chomp through it.

🌱Poor sleep, PMS, period pain, tight muscles, irritability, low energy can all be caused by magnesium deficiency.

It’s important to take some time off to reset and do activities that make your soul sing. This week we were supposed to be in Wanaka but flights got cancelled. Instead we are lucky enough to be road tripping around the NI snowboarding and surfing making the most of winter’s vitamin D.

Prebiotics: 🌱if you think of your gut as a garden, probiotics are the fertiliser, feeding and diversifying the trillions of residential gut bacteria.

Our bodies are incapable of digesting the fibre. Instead when they are eaten, your gut bacteria feeds off them. A diverse gut micobiome (different species of gut bacteria) promotes healthy digestion , helps produce certain vitamins, support a healthy immune system and can help fight inflammation.

The more varied your diet, the more varied your microbiome.
To increase variety:
🥦rotate different species of the same vegetable ie: orange kumara, purple kumara
🍠 eat different vegetables daily
🥕challenge yourself to make a dish with a vegetable you don’t normally use

In winter especially a lot of people suffer from nature deficiency, they need some fresh air and sunshine.

🌞 Light stimulates serotonin (our happy neurotransmitter) production in our eyes elevating our mood.

🌞Serotonin gets converted to melatonin (our sleepy neurotransmitter) at night helping us get to sleep.

🌞Vitamin D requires activation from the sunlight and this fat solvable vitamin is required for cortisol production, immune system and for a healthy mood.

Sometimes it requires a little more motivation to get yourself out and about in winter but it’s well worth it when you do.

Last weekend I went for a walk in the Bush to see a waterfall, this weekend I’ve been surfing. What do you do to get your fair share of 🌞 and nature?

Do you experience PMS, breast pain, water retention, mood swings, irregular periods, headaches, migraine, low s*x drive?
Any of these symptoms could be due to a hormonal imbalance.

I like to use the DUTCH (dried urine testing for comprehensive hormones) to get information on
🍀all 3 oestrogens and it’s metabolites.

🍀testosterone and it’s metabolites

🍀cortisol and it’s metabolites

🍀melatonin

🍀B12, B6 and glutathione markets

🍀metabolites of dopamine, epinephrine and nor epinephrine which are important neurotransmitters

🍀Testing s*x hormone metabolites give you information on how your body is detoxifying you’re hormones and if they are going down a ‘safe’ pathway or not.

If you would like to know if this test would be suitable for you please get in contact.

If you wake feeling too anxious or it takes you multiple cups of coffee to get moving in the morning you could have issues with your cortisol awakening response (CAR). This could be due to stress, inflammation or infection.
So how can you support that?
🌿Seek therapy if needed
🌿 Avoid cell phone exposure immediately on waking.
🌿Do grounding exercises like going for a walk in nature, ideally barefoot if weather permits.
🌿10 mins of meditation, breath work, yoga or mindfulness techniques.
🌿Seek social connection; call friends or family.
🌿Do some shaking exercises: imagine how an animal shakes after a stress or fright. Shake out each limb for 30secs to a minute. Stand up and twist back and forth while shaking out the arms. Bounce on the balls of your feet while shaking out your body.
🌿increase oxytocin
