We picked Stanley up from the vet on Monday morning, and heās now home recovering. (sharing the final vet bill too, in transparency to those who have donatedā¤ļø)
I was an emotional wreck waiting to pick him up. I didnāt know what to expect, and I was bracing myself for a big shock. I was also nervous about paying the final bill, which thankfully came in under the initial $18k estimate but was still around $15.5k. My hands were shaking as we swiped every credit card we had, but in the back of my mind, I felt so grateful for the donations that helped ease the burden of this nightmare situation and made it possible for usāand for Stanley.
When I finally saw him, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. The vet was very happy with his recovery, and I was shocked to see that Stanley is still the exact same quirky, weird dogājust a little less mobile. Weāve got a long road ahead, and the first few days at home were incredibly nerve-wracking. I called the vet five times on the first day, but Iām starting to feel more confident as I figure out whatās normal for him and what isnāt. We initially were preparing to take him back to the vet as he hadn't used his bladder, but he finally went.
Today has been even betterāheās already back to driving me crazy with his barking lol.
If you want more detailed updates, feel free to read onā£ļø or, if you're bored by now I understand lol
1/20: Stanley arrived home and p*ed at 6pm. Initially excited and playful, he soon became calm and settled after the sedation. He slept through the night but did experience some reverse sneezing. He made a few escape attempts but quickly gave up, not jumping or doing anything too vigorous. He drank water right away. For dinner, he had half a raw cube and one scoop of generic kibble.
1/21: Stanley didnāt p*e until 4:30pm, and he had his first p**p at 3pm, which was difficult for him. He is still on all medications, including bladder meds. So far, 1/4 trazodone is enough. He spent most of the day sleeping and resting. He was shivering, which I think was due to a bit of pain and likely feeling cold, so I let him rest on the couch with me to warm up. He hasnāt drunk water on his own, but I mixed it into his breakfast (half a raw cube and one scoop of generic kibble). For tonight, he will have 1.2 raw cubes and Animals Are Us kibble, which is of better quality. Around 4pm, he started barking, and it was clear that his bark reflex is still strong. He tried playing with a toy but ended up falling asleep. Heās not very interested in playing today and hasnāt wanted to walk much, so weāve allowed him to rest. His steps are still wobbly and he does not correct his back paws when flipped yet. He mostly wants belly rubs, so we did some gentle exercises during that time. Heās been gagging a bit after eating and throwing up some liquid, though not much. It seems like something might be stuck in his throat.
1/22 - Stanley woke up very sore and yelped when I touched him gently, so I let him rest until he was ready to move on his own. After breakfast, he seemed fine and got his meds at 8:30 a.m. He ate well and p*ed twice right away. His bladder and legs are looking stronger.
By 10:30 a.m., it was clear the sedatives werenāt working, so I gave him another 1/4 of Trazodone. Heās been barking non-stop at noises, growling at me to play or let him out, and seems very restless. He even tried to run off during potty time.
